Which PrCs exemplify a school of magic?
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:10:27 PM »
I don't mean Master Specialist (Complete Mage 70).  I hoped for an optimal choice for each school.

Abjuration
Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil (Complete Arcane 44)

Conjuration
Malconvoker (Complete Scoundrel 48)

Divination
Divine Oracle (Complete Divine 34)

Enchantment
Mindbender (Complete Arcane 54) - Only for 1 level.

Evocation
...

Illusion
Shadowcraft Mage (Races of Stone 120)

Necromancy
...

Transmutation
War Weaver (Heroes of Battle 112)
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

For Evocation I'd submit Spellwarp Sniper.  Nothing like a spellwarped Wings of Flurry to really teach your foe a lesson.
Are you worthy of Ascension?

What about Incantatrix?

"I am the Black Mage! I cast the spells that makes the peoples fall down!"

What about Incantatrix?

Even though they're theoretically affiliated with Abjuration they don't seem to particularly exemplify any of its themes. They may be one of the ultimate wizard PrCs but I'm not sure I'd call them the ultimate abjurer, if that makes sense.

For Necromancy I tend towards Pale Master, but how good it is depends on what degree of free-reanimation shenanigans your DM is likely to allow - if the DM doesn't allow spellstitching Animate Dead and such, Pale Master is the king of endless hordes of undead (as PrCs go, anyway.)

Evocation - War Mage.  Hi, with Cold Spell Spec and all [Cold] spells, I do +5 damage per die :)  Have a nice afterlife!

Necromancy - Not even arcane, as Bone Knight rocks.  Hi, I'm undead without the drawbacks!  -THWACK-

Transmutation has a shit ton...War Weaver, which is really more in the grey area of Incantatrix as it simply makes any wizard better (a meta-specialty if you will), same with classes like Fatespinner or Swiftblade, as they fuck with chance and time respectively.

Abjuration has Abjurant Champion
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!

Why would you even do this? It hurts my eyes and looks like you ate your keyboard before suffering an attack of explosive diarrhea.

Abjuration - Abjurant Champion
-This class really exemplifies the Gish as a whole.

Divination - Unseen Seer
-It has some illusion application as well, but the advanced learning really goes the distance when learning divine only divinations

Evocation - Elemental Savant
-Exemplifies in the sense that it is really only USEFUL for evocation.

Enchantment - Fatespinner
-Exemplifies Enchantment more than even the mind bender, screwing with saves and the +10/-10 capstone really can help go the distance vs. big bads.

Illusion - Dread Witch & Nightmare Spinner
-the combo that makes fear effects star players, though it feels more enchantment for some reason.

Transmutation - Master Transmographist
-The absolute epitome of the polymorph school. doesn't get more Transmutation than that.

If Elemental Savant is for Evokers, than Argent Savant should be there too(Yes, Force Spells kinda dwell in multiply schools. But Evocation does have a healthy majority of them).
For Illusion, I'm surprised, that no one mentioned the Shadowcraft Mage. The penultimate illusionist, get's even more reality, than the real evocation/conjuration ;)

That was what the OP gave as an example, actually :P

Yeah, but I don't know. SCM seems to be the un-illusionist.  Don't get me wrong, it's probably my favorite illusionist to play, but it's so different from what illusions usually do that it seems odd to think of it as the archetype.  Illusions befuddle, confuse, or deceive -- at least that's the core of it -- shadowcraft illusions destroy, create, etc.

In that case, Nightmare Spinner?  That could fit for Illusion, Enchantment, and Necromancy in ways.

For Evocation, we have War Mage (Dragonlance).
Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.
