The Hand of Vecna
« on: June 29, 2008, 09:43:44 PM »
Greetings all. Haven't posted on the CO boards here yet, some of you may remember I joined up relatively late to the *max forums. Anyway on to my question:

My party has recently come across the Hand of Vecna while playing through our game. I'm trying to figure out a way to keep it and put it to use. I'm ok with the Dex hit, don't like it but I can live with it. The real trick is the Saves vs becoming Evil. I have a high enough Will Save that I can pass on a 1, if I can find a way to make nat 1s not fail for Will Saves. I'm looking for a way to not fail Will saves on 1s, or be immune to the alignment altering effects of the Hand, or reroll a Will Save even 1/week. Any ideas on how to get around this problem are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and I have to say it's good to be back.
Maybe I'll reconstruct my sig from the WotC boards, maybe not, have to see.

IIRC There is a feat in PHB2 which replaces your wisdom bonus with a your constitution bonus to will saves and you don't fail on a nat 1, but that may be for fort saves.

You could also always grav a helm of opposite alignment cursed item thing to switch you back to good.

Yeah I'd thought of that but my character is neutral sadly, so opposite alignment still isn't quite there. I thought of that feat but sadly it is don't fail Fort Saves on 1s, I had theorized at one point the existence of other versions of that spell that allowed you to repeat the effect with other combinations of ability and save (though the logic behind it wouldn't be very strong).
Maybe I'll reconstruct my sig from the WotC boards, maybe not, have to see.

I believe it's called Steadfast Determination. But it's for Fort saves, not Will.

Wouldn't a simple Protection from Evil spell be enough? Or Mindblank, if you're high enough level. After all, I take it the alignment change is a mind effect.

Get a ToB item with the concentration check instead of will save one.  It explicitly states that you don't fail it on nat ones since it is a skill check rather than a save.  Should cover your problem.  Only 3k gp for the least diamond mind one, so quite cost effective.

Oooh, good call -- can't believe I forgot that. I assume if they've got the Hand of Vecna they shouldn't be worrying much about cash income, but I could be wrong.

Cash flow is actually a very non-issue since we have a twinked out Artificer in the party, if we want magic items we pretty much can get them made. Brilliant, take that Evil artifact.  :fu PC's for the win.

The ToB item sounds like the best fit for you.  Otherwise, there is the Lucky chain of feats to get some 1/day save rerolls (Complete Scoundrel, includes one to turn a natural 1 into a natural 20), the human-blooded chain of feats to get a 1/day save reroll (particularly Protected Destiny: 1/day a natural 1 on a save is counted as a 20, Races of Destiny).

A Luck Blade with 0 wishes costs a bit over 20,000 gp, lets you reroll once per day, and doesn't specify that you have to be weilding it to benefit. It is also a +2 sword and gives you a +1 luck bonus to all saves. It is well worth the money, and it is core.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

Not as cheap as the ToB item, but well worth it.  +1 if you can afford both.

Indeed, always a good idea to have a core option =)
