Crafting a piece of non magical equipment
« on: July 15, 2010, 11:19:42 PM »
I wish to make a shield similar to that used by the charcter Thalia Grace in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, basically it expands from a metal bracelet that is worn on the wrist

I'm thinking a simple craft check would be needed, but i'm not toally sure if thats all or which craft it would be.

Note this is for a 3.5 game

Craft (Armorsmithing). Honestly, the collapsing ability could really just be played off as flavor.

but wouldn't it affect spot checks?

You could treat the shield as a weapon(which it is with shield bash!) and put the Hideaway enhancement from MIC on it. It's a +2000gp weapon enchantment.

And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

the problem is we're playing a low to no magic setting, which is why i said non magical....

the current thinking for how  i'm going to do this is going be a combo of armorsmithing and possible knowledge of engineering...

So make it a 2000g mechanical enhancement, with close to the same effect.

Calling something magical non magical works with your DM?  Awesome.  You need nonmagical divine metamagic persist, divine power, etc.

Enhancement not enchantment, so it probably wouldn't grant the same ability, but it would be a good starting point...

Its not magical at all atleast the way i'm tring to do it...I know in the book series its a magic item. I'm seeing if i can do it WITHOUT the use of any magic at all. which why currently i'm thinking its going to take a combo of armorsmithing and engineering...

In that case you'd have to make it up, barring a direct conversion of the magic item or digging through d20 Future.

Or you could use an umbrella with reinforced materials.

I think you could probably do it just with high enough sleight of hand and escape artist checks.

from a real world eng. perspective you could probably pull it off with a bracer but not a bracelet. I could see the bracelet being the center of the shield with the outer portion being stacked on top of each other over the forearm. Then they could be allowed to swing around and lock into the shield form. It would be a lot like the oriental fans that stack on top of themselves. It would only require knowledge of ball bearings for the hub and springs for the opening and locking open.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

And probably some mechanical engineering to make sure the moving parts don't affect the shield's ability to deflect a blow.
