HENRY ROE aka: DOC
« on: October 10, 2009, 03:01:26 PM »
THEN...

Henry was sitting on a comfortable leather couch. It was the suede kind, smooth to the touch, and black. It held that leather scent that many people found to be soothing.

The office was paneled with wood, and it was a bit dark even with both window shades pulled wide. The psychologist made every attempt to make the place feel warm and inviting with the use of table lamps that emitted a warm yellow glow to your immediate surroundings. Degrees and framed art hung on the walls.

Doctor Hildebrand sat across from you in his own chair. His legs crossed casually as he leaned back listening to your responses. He held a leather-bound case that held a yellow legal pad, and a pen. He was in his early 50's if you guess was right. He had a sharp widow's peak but the remaining hair was thick and grey. He wore a pair of glasses that reminded you of your grandfather's. So far you liked Hildebrand.

"Tell me about the first time you lost a patient, Henry. Perhaps we can find some answers there?" Hildebrand requested.

Do we really have to go over this? sighs Ok, it was about 3 years ago, his name was Sgt. Jim Talbert. He was a squad leader in my platoon. He took a gut shot from a .308 it exited the back nicking his left kidney. I took too long to get to him. I was so confident i could save anyone from anything since i had gone almost 4 years in combat without anyone dying on my watch. I had a few who were dead before there was anything i could do, head shots mostly, but never anyone who still had a chance. Henry looks up at Dr. Hildebrand with a look that seems almost angry, but it doesn't seem directed at the Dr.

"Do you somehow feel that you deserve to treat yourself the way you do as a self-imposed penance of some kind?" Dr. Hildebrande paused, looking over his clipboard. "And it has caused havoc in your personal life as well, hasn't it?"

Outside the sky was darkening. You knew the session would come to a close soon and you'd be free to grab some dinner and head home.

"There is right and there is wrong. I'm a firm believer that you should always do what is right. Yes i get angry with myself when i don't do what is right. Is it really that destructive? I don't drink nearly as much alcohol as the people you would say don't have a 'complex' like I do, i don't do drugs, and the nightmares have begun to subside.

As to my personal life, it my personal life so you have no need to go fiddling around in it."
This time the anger in Henry's eyes does seem to be directed toward the Dr.

"In my time in the military i took a lot of risks, but every time it was the right thing to do. How can you say that saving another person's life isn't the right thing to do? I know that i could die any day. If i'm have to get killed i would rather it be trying to do what is right rather than being a news report about some poor sap that was killed in a car crash or by a mugger."

"You only need to tell me what you feel comfortable with, Henry. You know that. I'm not here to pull teeth. When and if you are ready to talk about more personal things is entirely up to you." He said is calm tones.

The doctor scribbled down some notes while talking. Then stood offering his hand to Henry. "It's that time. I'd offer to stay a little later tonight if you wanted, but tonight my wife is cooking my favorite roast, and if I don't get home the boys will have eaten the best parts of it.

"My advice to you for the moment Henry, is to try not to blame yourself.  Maybe pray about it with your pastor after church some Sunday. It is a burden on your psyche that doesn't have to be there. It wasn't your fault."
He pats Henry on the shoulder. "Okay? Now I'll see you next Thursday, same time."

THEN...

There was a heavy fog that morning. You and your father sat facing each other across a humble fire and drank coffee from a thermos. Around you the Louisianan wilderness sprung up around you, and the sounds of batou birds were waking up with you to give shrill cries in the morning air.

Just take it from here and we'll play off each other. :)

You know Dad, Thanksgiving is only a couple of days away. Grams is going to be mad if we don't get a deer early enough to have it cleaned before then. Henry starts to check his gear before they head out to their hunting stands. The air, as always, is heavy with dew. At least it was cool this year, lower 70s.

Henry hears the sound of something moving through the underbrush about 40 feet away. Off to your right.

That ain't no wind dad. Henry swings toward his right shouldering his Winchester 94, expecting a wild boar or nutria.

Moving from behind a thicket and into a small clearing through the trees, Henry spots a buck with a wide rack.50' away, it seems blissfully unaware of the two men.

Raising his gun Doc quickly takes aim just behind the forelegs. If he can hit the heart it should drop almost instantly.
Deer Shot: (1d20+4=21, 2d10=12) At the very least that buck isn't happy. (unless it has levels of fast like the sniper who deflated our boats  :lol)
