Truenaming Race.
« on: November 07, 2008, 03:01:10 PM »
How about a race that was just like the human, but instead of having a bonus feat and skill points, it gets a truenaming bonus.

Maybe it gets a +5 racial bonus on truespeak checks? Or a bonus that scales with Hit Dice? Maybe it has an expanded capacity for the amount of ranks it can invest in truespeak? (I'm particularily fond of the last one.)

Not that I don't think the truenamer can be optmized, it's just I don't have all the books I would need to get that +102 bonus.

I know this all seems like a cheap way to make the class a little easier to optimize but... Well, I do like the idea of a race with a affinity for truenaming anyways.

Thoughts?

I'd spread the bonus out, maybe +1 every 4 levels, and a +1 bonus at level. That way, it's not a lump sum right at the beginning, but a slowly climbing bonus as you become higher level. And then replace the bonus feat with a bonus Truenaming feat, maybe.

Yeah, I do like the sounds of that one.

Once every four levels would be a +5 bonus at twentieth level though, I was thinking something a little bigger, maybe a +1 every two levels?  I like the idea of the bonus truenaming feat though.

It's actually +6, since its +1 at 1, and then +1 every 4 (4, 8, 12, 16, 20), just to be picky. If you're looking for a bonus on the level of +1/2 levels, you might as well rewrite the CR calculation instead, since otherwise this makes it a no brainer race. With +6, it's already very close, or is.

Then again, given where this is going, rewriting the CR calc might be the best thing out there.

Yeah, you're right, 1/2 levels is a bit much, I do like the +6.  And the bonus trunaming feat...  I like it.

The last thing I want is to rewrite the core rule though.

It's not quite as bad as you think, since its a basic calculation and the system as currently stands has plenty of issues. It's an easy place to play around, really.

Hm, well, for now I'll just write up the '+6' race, post it and later talk about the calculation.
