I wanted to try to remake the half dragon, so it would be a bit more playable. The balance point of this might be slightly higher than normal for PC races, but it shouldn't be too crazy. I'm not sure how it will work in practice. The use of a RHD for typical LA+0 races will slow casters down and probably be a boost for non-casters. This may mix well with other races with lots of racial hit dice, but I didn't really put that much thought into those races/monsters.
The goal is to get something playable for LA+0 PC races without going overboard.
Half DragonCreating A Half-DragonSize and TypeThe creature's type changes to dragon. Size is unchanged. All racial Hit Dice become dragon hit dice, which likely affects hit points, saves, and BAB. Also note that creatures with one hit die (including PC races) have their hit die converted to dragon. This effectively gives them one racial hit die taken before they gain any class levels.
SpeedAll half dragons have wings. They can use these wings to slow their fall so they do not take any damage, or to glide. When gliding, a half dragon travels 40 feet horizontally for every 10 feet of descent.
Once a half dragon has at least five hit dice (counting class levels), it can fly at double their base land speed (max 120 ft) with average maneuverability.
In order to use the wings, the half dragon must be able to spread them, and they must have enough available space to accommodate a creature one size larger than themselves.
Armor ClassThe half dragon's natural armor improves by +1, or it gains a natural armor bonus of +1 if it did not have any.
Special AttacksAll half dragons gain a breath weapon. Consult the table below to see what type of energy damage the breath weapon deals and what shape area of effect the breath weapon affects. All breath weapons deal 1d6 damage per hit die (including class levels), and deal half damage on a successful Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 hit dice + Constitution modifier). The range of a cone is 10 feet per odd hit die, and the range of a line is double this.
When a half dragon uses its breath weapon, it must wait 1d4 rounds before it can do so again.
Special QualitiesA half-dragon has all the special qualities of the base creature, plus darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision.
A half dragon gains energy resistance to the same type of energy as its breath weapon equal to double its total hit dice.
If a half dragon has levels in the sorcerer class, he may add his racial hit dice to his sorcerer class level for purposes of determining level-dependant variables for his sorcerer spells.
AbilitiesIncrease from the base creature as follows: Str +2, Cha +2.
