Q261 Has anyone ever figured the total amount of spellbook pages it would take to contain every Sorcerer/Wizard spell printed?

The numbers according to IMarvinTPA (Wizards of the Coast material only):

Spell Level   Number of Spells   Pages per Spell   Total Pages
034134
11751175
22522504

41804720
51825910

Thanks! Is there a way to get it to print out just the amount of spells available? Trying to figure out how much secret page trickery needs to go into a pair of BBBs for a Wiz/Archivist theurge.

Actually there's even more. See, that site doesn't have every spell done up by WotC. They're still missing a couple of books.

a
Is there anything keeping me from casting 2 Time Stops in a round (assuming proper metamagic shenanigans, of course)?

b
Like unto the first -- is there any issue with casting multiple Time Stops within a Time Stop?

Quote from: Ask wizards stumpers
12. Andre asks, Several friends and I are having a discussion about casting time stop in a time stop. Can you do it, and will it have any effect?

Casting time stop within an existing time stop only gives you extended duration if the duration roll of the second time stop exceeds that of the first time stop. To give an example, if you cast time stop, and you roll 3 rounds as the duration, then you cast another time stop within the first, rolling, say, 4 rounds of duration, you are granted one additional round within the original time stop. Further castings would have no effect unless you rolled greater than 4 rounds of duration, i.e. 5 rounds (the maximum), in which case you would have one additional round of apparent time within the original casting's effect.

okay, that makes sense (kinda sorta ... at least from a pragmatic PoV).
So, am I reading that right ..... let's say that I gots me a maximized time stop -- if I cast time stop again in the 5th round (maxed, of course), it still wouldn't do anything?

Thanks.

For game balance, it appears so.

yeah.

but there's nothing stopping me from quickening one; and then when the duration is done, casting another one in the same round, right?

(yeah, I know .... I'm acting like a noob with this .... sorry)

You wouldn't even need to Quicken it. Just use your standard action from the last "virtual" round of Timestop to ready an action to recast it as soon as the spell ends. It isn't nested, but barring Contingencies and readied actions from your enemies which specifically go off when you cast Timestop (which should have already triggered the first time you cast it...), you'll be able to recast it before anyone else gets to go.

Of course, you need to know how long the first one is going to last, so unless it is maximized, you probably won't be able to do this, but that also applies if you're allowed to recast the second one before the first ends. So a Greater Rod of Maximize is pretty much a necessity for any version of this, I think.

no.
level 8 is when you get the "improved metamagic" ability.  level 10 just gets you a bonus feat.

or are you just saying that any responsible player will take all 10 levels as a matter of principle?  ;) (to which I say "duh!" :p)

You're wrong, it's at level 10.  Read the 3.5 Incantantrix in PGtF page 61.

I'm not sure what question this should be because there were a bunch of unnumbered ones!

Q262: How many hours should Mage Armor last before it's a good deal?  4?  I mean, yes ideally you'd like more, but at what level should a Sorcerer start picking it up, and at what level does it really not matter anymore how long it lasts?  I guess I'm looking for two numbers then.

In my humble opinion, CO is haberdashery. Some say we're mad, but we can all agree we're hatters. Yes, we have potential to make very sophisticated hats, very fancy hats, be they dark or light. But the truth is that the color of the hat does not come from the group of us - our community doesn't directly produce hats. We simply give average head circumferences, list current fashion trends, and point out some shiny, obscure baubles to add to the latest hat line.

The adventuring day is 8 hours long. But by then AC stops mattering. So get it at low levels, and don't really worry about it later.

I think you shouldn't bother with mage armor after a mithral, feycraft (DMGII) chain shirt with a thistledown suit (RotW) becomes easily affordable.  It has 0% spell failure, provides a +4 armor bonus, costs 1,850 gp, and is completely nonmagical.  You could probably squeeze that in by 5th level, so I don't know if mage armor is ever a good deal.

Ignore people who are so ridiculously hung up over heavily-modded Mithral Chain Shirts.  Get the spell itself at level 1, and a Wand (750 gp) when you can afford it (simultaneously removing it from your spells known list).  By the time you run out of charges on the wand, you should have a battery of other defenses much more effective than AC (as Sunic says).

oh shit -- I didn't even realize the change (I've just always used MoF).
This thing is even more ridiculous than the 3.0 version  :o  (there were definitely some major balance issues going on with FR -- stuff like this makes me even more suspect of FR material ... more so than even drag.mag.)

Q 257: The Sugliin weapon from Frostburn states "this weapon is so unwieldy and heavy that making a single attack with it is a full-round action."

Charging is a special full-round action that allows you to move up to twice your speed and attack during the action.

Can someone without the Sugliin Mastery feat charge with a Sugliin, or does the extended attack time prevent this?

I would say the latter.
normally, a single attack is a standard action.  However, there are 2 times when this is not the case: iterative attacks and on a charge.
Charge lets you double-move and make a single attack.
You can't over-run on a charge, because that is a standard action.
As a matter of fact, you can't do any kind of special attack on a charge that is defined as being a standard action.
Full-round action > Standard action.  If you can't do a standard action, then a full-round action should be out of the question.

sorry for the verbosity ... just wanted to be very specific.

For a little demonstration, go outside and try it yourself.
1st, take something that would be a suitable analog for a sword (if an actual sword is unavailable) - a broom handle will do - and then go charging 60 toward a tree and swing.
2nd, take a friggin' tree branch, and do the same thing.
Let me know if you can tell the difference.  I think you'll see that the extra feat is warranted.
:D

... common sense

I agree with you, I'm just trying to find an actual rules mechanic way of proving it (your example about over-runs works nicely).  My DM had us in a gladiatorial tournament last night, with exotic weapons hidden in the ring.  He was allowing people (both PC's and NPC's) to charge and attack with the Sugliin.  I didn't argue, but I wanted rules to back me up when it comes up in my game (we alternate campaigns each week).

Ignore people who are so ridiculously hung up over heavily-modded Mithral Chain Shirts.

  • The mithral chain shirt has exactly one modification.  That makes it heavily modified?
  • I put the idea forward once with no real vehemence.  This makes me not only hung up, but ridiculously hung up?
  • You feel he should ignore me, not just my suggestion?  Should he only ignore things I say with regard to this question, or everything I say from this point on?  You were a bit vague.

Anyway, I'm not a sorcerer expert.  If you say learning mage armor is definitely worthwhile even when you only know two spells and it only last one hour, I won't argue.

I would appreciate it if, in the future, you restricted your criticisms to my ideas instead of saying I am ridiculous and should be ignored.
