48. A PC can go from being a no-name adventurer to overthrowing deities in a span of two months in game.

Hmm, an average of 13.5 encounters per level as I recall.  About 4 encounters per day.  270 encounters per 20 levels.  67.5 days.  Wow... it IS only 2 months and change O.o

A pretty intense 2 months though.. no downtime =)
I think the exact number is 13.33 (13 1/3) encounters. I'm not sure how much that changes the math, though.

It's 13.3 encounters assuming they're all even CR to the party's level, and there are four people in the party, all the same level.  If you fight something a couple levels above you (like a boss fight), depending on your level, you might end up with triple the XP you would have form an even-CR fight.

No, it's because rolling three sixes on three six-sided dice is a good thing.

You know, unlike every other game that uses dice. (Snakes symbolise the devil! Snakes and Ladders is Satanic!)
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
[spoiler]Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.

Also, by the time you hit level 12 you are probably paying a wizard to bind up a new monster to fight, then solo it. Just to tuck those bonus XPs away for later.

And to make up for everyone else getting all those RP bonuses you missed out on right?  ;)
Tiers explained in 8 sentences. With examples!
[spoiler]Tiers break down into who has spellcasting more than anything else due to spells being better than anything else in the game.
6: Skill based. Commoner, Expert, Samurai.
5: Mundane warrior. Barbarian, Fighter, Monk.
4: Partial casters. Adapt, Hexblade, Paladin, Ranger, Spelltheif.
3: Focused casters. Bard, Beguiler, Dread Necromancer, Martial Adapts, Warmage.
2: Full casters. Favored Soul, Psion, Sorcerer, Wu Jen.

what?? 13 encounters per level? that sounds alittle high imo. in my games its usually about 5 encounters. but i do give alot of bonus xp for RPing, teamwork etc etc. and my encounters are usually afew higher CR... my PC's have pretty close encounters hehe  :devil

I wanna add to this thought:

An "encounter" need not be a fight, and not all "encounters" need to be resolved in armed conflict in order to result in XP gain.

IMO, the majority of DMs seem to forget the former entirely, and even among those that don't forget, far too many offer diminished XP awards for anything other than violent conflict resolution.

Players should be rewarded for more than just slaying monsters, and for creatively handling all sorts of encounters.

Instead of razing a small village of orc and goblins that were pillaging the nearby human town, my level 6 warlock convinced (with a 35 or 40 diplomacy roll) their leader to move away. Having no place to settle to, well, i gave them the lands the mayor would give me as reward. Oh, and they got a job as wardens of the town. I also had to give cheese to their leader, he pillaged the town mostly for that... I had some, how convenient!

i completely agree. if my players talk there way out of a fight i still give them xp for the monsters/npcs what ever. plus as i stated above i tend to give out alot of extra xp for RPing, when a player has a good idea, when players use teamwork well. if they did alot of plot advancement and kept to what ever quest/mission they were on i will dish some more out
 :D

you know your playing 3.5 when the guy playing the generic cleave fighter just straight quits the group when a warblade comes in.

and then the dm calls you o.p. and quits too......

And for all that you should get XP at least equal to what you would have received for killing everything in that village, with a bonus for the direct encounter with the leader, plus an RP bonus for playing your character's selflessness to a T, a creativity bonus for helping them get the jobs, and another RP bonus for figuring out why the attacks were happening in the first place. I'd probably calculate it to XP sufficient to cover 2.25 to 2.5 encounters for your level.

To be fair, if you're talking about professional military elite unit soldier level use, this isn't necessarily inaccurate.
Eh, the wizard have more money than them combined, he could in theory just use all his money on a fleet of trained attack mules, but then we aren't playing 3.5 but zergling rushing in Starcraft instead.
