How can I become immune to the Shaken condition?
« on: September 06, 2010, 02:59:14 AM »
Intro
I'm a Warforged Shaper who wants to avoid the Shaken penalty of using temporal acceleration.

Methods
-Become undead, a full construct, or mindless.
-Become immune to mind-affecting effects.
-Become immune to fear effects.
-Blooded [Regional] feat (Player's Guide to Faerun 35).  Technically limited to centaur, dwarves, elves, gnolls, halflings, humans, and orcs.
-Bullheaded [Regional] feat (Player's Guide to Faerun 37).  Technically limited to dwarves, humans, and taer.

Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

Personal mind blank? some levels of paladin?

i guess you could use the ritual in savage species to get another subtype added.

that's all I can think of of the top of my head.
E: "Did they... did they just endorse the combination of the JSDF and US Army by showing them as two lesbian lolicons moving in together and holding hands and talking about how 'intimate' they were?"
B: "Have you forgotten so soon? They're phasing out Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Well, what's so bad about being shaken? The penalty isn't that big.

Those ways do seem to be the only ways I can think of too. Unfortunately, Autohypnosis would only be usable the round after the Shaken penalty ends.

The feat Body Awareness works too, but it requires Arcane Focus. Something a psionic character usually wouldn't have.

I've got a big section in my lists of stuff on immunity to fear. I'm sure some of it must explicitly protect against being shaken...

Sometimes, their tits (3.5) get enhancements (houserules), but that doesn't mean people don't like nice tits.

Though sometimes, the surgeon (DM) botches them pretty bad...

Play a Kender.  Seriously, they reduce all fear affects 2 steps as a racial ability.
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!

yeah, but then you're a ... kender.

And i though that they were just plain immune to feat as of 3.5 DLCS?
Eh, the wizard have more money than them combined, he could in theory just use all his money on a fleet of trained attack mules, but then we aren't playing 3.5 but zergling rushing in Starcraft instead.

One problem with shaken is that while the penalty isn't that big, it bumps any other fear effect that hits you up to much nastier levels. Frightened and Panicked can be bad news.

Mechanically, there's nothing to be worried about.  If your DM is so scared of Kender because of what he read in novels, just re-fluff it.

I don't allow them because of all the players who want to play one reading the novels and attempting to more annoyingly recreate that image. It's an annoyance headache.

It's not just the novels.  Read the racial entry in the DLCS.

Still just fluff.  Nothing mechanical that forces them to be annoying.

Besides that racial taunt, of course...

And that whole kleptomania thing.

Kleptomania isn't in the mechanics, though.

The taunt is just a racial ability to draw aggro.

Kleptomania isn't in the mechanics, though.

The taunt is just a racial ability to draw aggro.

Or you could play an undead, and refluff it so you're just a guy with a skin condition that makes you immune to mind-affecting effects and reverses your healing polarity. That should be fine, right?

A racial ability to draw aggro through insults and inflammatory speech, yeah.

There's also the issue that there exist tables the DM is supposed to roll on for the contents of your pockets... so yeah, kleptomechanics.

Official or homebrew?  I've heard of only one person doing it and he sounded a lot more like the exception.

Undead does a hell of a lot more than just that, Benly, so that's a case where it's not just fluff.  There is no entry in Kender statblocks like
Handling (Ex): Kender often steal things without knowing it.  Every round, there's a 5% chance a Kender will attempt to steal something from an adjacent person.  He makes a Sleight of Hand check opposed as normal by the target's Spot check.
If there was, then I would agree that mechanically they are incredibly annoying.  As it is, mechanically, there is nothing that should upset the game.

Their kleptomainia is just fluff.  An undead, on the other hand, is a very well-defined creature type (nonliving, immune to any affect that requires a Fort save unless Harmless or affects objects, etc.)  Skin condition definitely doesn't cover any of that.

The table is official. I believe it's in one of the other books.

Edit:
Also, at that point, play a halfling and take Fearless if you are just going to completely reflavor the race just to get a fear immunity.
