also you might want to try some Dual Progression class .... Soul Manifester or Soul Caster or Saphire Hierarch .... since both VOP and most Soulmelds affect mainly just yourself and tend(for the VOP mainly) to be defensive in nature rather than Utility, Travel or Offensive

How easy would it be to make a good totemist VOP build my first thought would be that it would be fairly easy but I'm not sure?
Pretty easy, though you'd want to pick up some of the incarnate soulmelds for mobility purposes and some utility.
Toemist has flight covered with a few soulmelds and the Blink Shirt is the best teleportation soulmeld in the game.  What more could they want in Mobility?  Swimming?  Got that covered too with Kraken Mantle.
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!

true it does have some nice movement based Soulmelds ....... but if they had a one level Dip in Warblade and used a Feat: Martial Study(Shadow Blink) ... it would give a Swift Action Teleport and you have a Swift action recovery as well ... without dipping Totemists do have a Very nice Soulmeld selection ... and can also bind to the Totem slot

flight can be had racialy: Dragonborn(Wings) or 1/2 Fey, etc...

MB gives the fastest fly speed this side of Full Casters when capped out. Makes it that much better when you are zipping around at 170ft/round (28.33ft/second, or about 19.31 miles/hour if my math is right).

Shapeshifting your arm and hitting someone with it is funny and all, but the real humor starts with tentacles and goes downhill from there.

19.35 mph, actually, not that it matters.

Also, that 170 could be multiplied by 4 for running, for a flight speed in excess of any north american highway.

Don't worry, Bear Puns surfaced around the same time Stephen Colbert revealed he was One Of Us. Gamers will make jokes about it all the time: Making bear puns is a good way to tell if someone is a dedicated gamer or not (the gamers will usually joke along and keep stringing puns together, the non-gamer will probably groan).

colbert is a gamer???   I know that black guy on scrubs plays dnd. I was watching some I love the 80's/90's or something and they were talking about stars that play dnd.

What is known is he is a comic book collector. The rumors are that he's been to gaming conventions, and even sat in on a DnD Day once.

Total thread derailment but: is it somehow PR death to admit one games currently? I know Vin Diesal has also admitted to it.  Maybe with real life success the ol' dungeon crawl with the buddies loses some of it's luster?  :looloo

Back on topic, what do you guys think then of what I am considering?

We have Doppleganger race with one free LA and can buy off another so that's 6 levels.

The I am thinking Barbarian 2, Warshaper 2, Bear Warrior 1, Warshaper 2, Bear Wrrior 4, FotF 2, ?1?

Vow of Poverty taken at level 18 to coincide with FotF 1 when he gets the bonus for ditching armor.

He can fly by taking an avian form but would I be able to use that with the bear rage?  Oh and it won't really be a bear but reflavored into a more unique war form like a Tzimice for those of you who know what they are...

Oh and how would the FoTF unarmed damage and bite damage from Feral trance synergize if at all with the bear-rage claw and bite attacks?

Depends on what they are doing all ready. A Football Coach would be given funny looks from the non-gamer sports fanatics, but the rest of the world wouldn't even bat an eyelash. For some people, it actually boosts their popularity (Obama, for example, got a little love from the comicbook fans for being one).

Really, it only hurt PR back about 20 years ago. Back then, being a geek was a bad mark in the public eye. Once the internet became popular, the public paradigm of geeks shifted from a negative light to a form of respect (because a good number of geeks are tech savvy, especially with the net).

Comicbook geeks still get weird looks, but that's phasing out with the popularity of the Superhero movies (Dark Knight, Iron Man, Spiderman, etc). It's just taking a while. Anime fans will still be viewed a little weirdly, but with stuff like Death Note, FMA, and a slew of other quality shows coming out it's only a matter of time.

Trekkies are still going to be considered freaks though. Especially if they know Klingon.

Okay I decided to drop the doppleganger idea.  If it wasn't for the RHD I'd be more down for it but 6-8 levels are too high a price to pay for a +4 AC and a weak detect thoughts.

I decided to try some variations on Striders FrostBear build suggested above.  Tome of Battle is out so no swordsage and I have to be careful to avoid multiclassing xp penalties.  I have two ideas here, please help me weigh the pros and cons:

I get 1 free LA so I'm going for mineral warrior. LA buyoff is allowed.

Note I haven't figured out the order of the progression yet so advice there is helpful.

First thought is to be a Goliath, Barb 1 (Pounce, mountain rage), Stoneblessed 3, Deepwarden 2, FotF 1, Bear Warrior 5, Frostrager 5, Warshaper 2, Cleric 1 (Animal Devotion for more strength or flying which handles that objection to VoP).

The other idea is to just go Dwarf (Mineral Warrior), with Barb 1, Deepwarden 2, FotF 2, BW 5, FR 5, Warshaper 4, Cleric 1.

The goliath gets more strength and Con but will lack the ghost touch ability of FotF 2 (due to VoP synergy) and the extra reach and fast healing of WS 3 and 4.

The Dwarf won't have as much strength and con but gets the benefits of being able to hit ethereal things plus the reach and fast healing.

So...which would y'all recommend?

I'd swap Mineral Warrior for Feral, since the Fast Healing would be more useful than the DR.
