Cleric of Flames
« on: July 09, 2010, 03:05:37 PM »
I am taking over from a character in a play by post game and have been left with a cleric to bring up to quality. Character left the current adventuring party at level 5 and is returning under my control at level 16 so i need to build around preselected options....

Silberbrow human Cleric 5
Fire domain, Knowledge domain

with spontaneous domain (fire)

 H: Searing spell
 F: Divine Metamagic
 F: Extra Turning
 1: Accelerate metamagic (Searing spell)
 3: Energy Substitution (Fire)
 6:
 9:
12:
15:
18:

Apparently I need to stay true to concept (which is a pyromaniac blasting cleric) and the character has to take 10 levels of elemental savant...

party line-up:
Monk 16
Crusader/swordsage/warblade/master of the nine
Healer 16
Soulknife/soulbow of some sort.

So... blasting feats/spells/PRCs/Items for clerics if we have any. Blasting cleric is pretty sub optimal but considering the rest of the group the power level in the game is pretty low so that should be fine.
I had thought of taking practical metamagic several times along with a load of blasting metamagic feats as minimum level of one higher than the spells normal level means I can apply a lot of +1 adjustments for a total of +1 increase (using DMM of course) but I am stuck on what feats I should actually take.

As always any help at all is appreciated

Silver Pyromancer from FoE (IIRC) may be able to help you on that, and what is the DMM for?

you can easily qualify for pyrokinetic from the xph as well with only minor tweaking.

Probably Searing Spell, which costs 2 turns/use, so would give him about 5ish Searing Spells per day.  That's ok, I suppose.  Silver Pyromancer would indeed be nice, but it loses a caster level, and iirc it's only half the damage becomes holy, making Searing Spell, if you make it good, more valuable.  I think it gives you access to pally spells, though, for what that's worth.  Although I cannot recall what book the S Pyromancer is in off hand.

Doesn't Blackfire, despite its name, not do fire damage?  That could give you a great fallback in addition to Searing Spell.  My only problem w/ this build is that if you're going to focus on blasting it'd be good to blast really well.  I'm a little at a loss of how to do that off the top of my head.  Even some +1 per die of damage stuff could help out a lot.  I feel the Elemental Savant doesn't really give you anything along those lines.  It gives you some resistances, but no more oomph to the blasting.

You might also ask the DM if you can have the fiery equivalent of Lord of Uttercold.

Sanctified One of Kord from Complete Champion could help :)

Or take one level of Sanctified One of Kord, from Complete Champion... you lose a caster level, but your fire stuff ignore resistance  :)

Silver Pyromancer requires arcane spells... otherwise it would be awesome.

On another note would I not need to worship kord to become a sanctified one? Ill ask the DM about it though and see if he will let me. At the moment the character has no deity so getting that through shouldn't be such an issue as changing from one to another.

Mechanically you're just required to complete a sanctification ritual performed by a priest or other authority of Kord's church.  The brightside is that even if the DM requires you to worship Kord I doubt Kord will complain that you have chosen the path of setting shit on fire.

Energy admixture?

5 turn attempts to double the damage on one spell could be ok. Especially if you can make it energy admixture sonic.
Monks are pretty much the best designed class ever.

Fiery Burst  Blast all day long by reserving 1 fire spell.  Adds +1 CL to fire spells.
Fiery from Sandstorm.  Adds +1 damage per die to fire spells.
Blistering from PHB II.  Adds +2 damage per die to fire spells. And if they fail the save, -2 to attacks and skills until the beginning of your next turn.

With just Fiery Burst, you can get the flavor of a fire blasting cleric.
If you are an ethical person, you do the right thing even when no one is watching...

If you do the DMM-thing, Echoing Spell(Secrets of Xen'Drik) helps preserve some Firepower.
Spell Compendium has the Dragon Breath Spell(for fire choose Red or Gold), if you can combine persist & searing

Sanctified One of Kord > Searing

Searing deals half damage against creatures with immunity.  SOoK allows for full damage.

It has been mentioned already.

Besides, the character already has searing spell and there is no retraining.
