Making a Core cleric is as easy as saying Thaumaturge.

He said PHB only. No Thaumaturge. That's in the DMG.

And no magic items either, apparently.

Ouch. Druid might be able to handle that, the cleric...less so.

With or without proper pronunciation? :P

Well, he only said make a character without the DMG. Going by the letter of the word, getting new magic items after the campaign starts is fair game.

But it's so fun to imagine the ways the cleric will spend 20 levels of WBL on mundane items.

I think there's a whole debate to be had about whether buying magic items after the game's begun counts as using books outside the PHB. After all, if you level up halfway in the game and take a non-PHB feat, that would probably count as using a non-PHB source. So, yeah. Anyway this is a really silly thing to be having a debate about.

Buy 760k worth of Alchemist's Fire or flasks of acid and dump it on people. For when you just need to kill something quickly.

Gang. gang hold up.  First lemme clear something up.  I am only using the expert NPC class because it is simple to understand and has no gimmicks the DM may feel overwhelmed by.  Remember these guys are all old school, nothing wrong with that, but they are use to things having order to them.  Like I asked if I made a build with a bunch of classes and just about all of them said they would not allow it because they felt that once you pick a class it is a class for life unless you get a prestige class that fits out around level 10.  They take their fluff very seriously.

If I wanted I could break the game by being a cleric, wizard, or druid.  I picked a dread necromancer because it is Tier three and let me do a nice range of stuff for combat as other things I tried, the crusader and the fighter type with high strength due to templates.  In reality the group has all the classic bases covered, we have two "tanks", a blaster sorcerer, a healer cleric, and a sneaky rogue.  I kinda am now really like a fifth wheel as this group just barely gets through encounters.  Such as this past session I couldn't make it due to work the following day so they played on.  Well it seems the players not there got stuck in a pit trap, no biggie it was so we did not get lost I think, and they started to fight a bunch of orcs.  The cleared a few waves but in the end some "elite" orcs with AC 19 and 30 hp each kicked the team's butt as they had magical help.  So for this group if orcs with 30 hp and an AC of 19 is tough then I dunno, but I am bitchin again for no reason.

Sorry for the wall of text.  Main point being I am making a wacky character such as an optimized expert just to do what ever.  I am open to anything from any book to to this build.  No limit on just core though if I do just core I will change my dread necro wizard to a necro specialist wizard. If I do that well I pretty much can tame any encounter with minimal thought.  Thanks all.
