Need methods of hiding objects.
« on: July 07, 2010, 05:32:51 AM »
In an upcoming game I'm thinking of having my character be a smuggler. This doesn't have much of a impact on the character's build, and indeed, I'd like to minimize the impact on the build in case being a smuggler ends up being detrimental to the game, or meself.

Introduction aside, what are the most useful ways to hide illegal objects that don't require me to change my build, that is, it should probably be doable with only magic items.

Spells:
Shadow Cache - Spell Compendium - hide stuff in a pocket of the Plane of Shadow for later retrieval
Hoard Gullet - Dragon Magic - safely turn yourself into a "mule"
Secret Chest - Player's Handbook - hide a chest on the Ethereal Plane for as long as 60 days and can retrieve it at will
Hidden Lodge - Spell Compendium - safe house that requires a DC 30 survival check for anyone to notice that it's there
Magnificent Mansion - Player's Handbook - invisible extradimensional safe house

Magic Items:
Possum Pouch - Complete Adventurer - magical hidden pouch
Glove of Storing - Dungeon Master's Guide - stores one item in an extradimensional space inside the gloves
Casting Glove - Magic Item Compendium - functions as a glove of storing but cheaper
Ghostfolly's Gloves - Weapon's of Legacy -  also function like gloves of storing but multiple items up to 10lbs in total weight
Wand Bracelet - Magic Item Compendium - shrinks items down to charms that fit on the bracelet
Bag of Trash - Traps and Treachery (3rd party, Legends and Lairs, Fantasy Flight Games) - basically a worn out dirty bag that magically makes anything you throw into it look like worthless junk and refuse

Complete Scoundrel has a whole section on hidden spaces starting on page 107.

For very small stuff that you won't use often but may need desperately at some point, there's one I used to use that isn't RAW but which my DM thought was neat enough to allow anyway.  You should ask yours.

Get the items in question made or painted in more or less the same colour as your flesh, give yourself a deep cut somewhere you can easily reach with your teeth (or claws if you have 'em), place the items in the gash and heal the wound magically.  You might suffer a slight max hp or ability score reduction for having hidden tools and/or weapons embedded in a limb, but the ability to produce a lockpick and a dagger after being strip and cavity searched can be invaluable.

better make them non-magical, just in case. or pay for a nystul's....

don't forget the shrink item spell... quite handy for most non-magical things.

mind the durations though.

if you can talk your dm into converting up spells from 2nd ed, there was the ever popular 'deep pockets' spell.

in my campaigns, i've allowed people to find "antique" items and scrolls, which are simply items and spells from 1st and 2nd ed., as treasure. very popular, especially when the 3.x+ versions is nerfed or non-existent. ^^

I had a Temple Raider of Olidammara that did this. I asked the DM about it and everything, and since everyone else had weapons and such that teleported to them, (The wizard, specifically, was very excited about having a teleporting spellbook.) he decided it was fine.

Next session, we get arrested and strip-searched. They find 'wierd shaped lumps' on my chest, so I automatically take 2d10 points of damage and have none of my stuff. As soon as I get thrown into the cell, the barbarian calls his axe to his hand and kills both guards, so we escape.

I was kind of annoyed.
Witty sayings? Nah, not right now. Currently playing Dwarf Fortress and League of Legends. I really recommend League of Legends.

Only 2d10? No wonder they found 'em, you didn't bury 'em deep enough.  And on your chest?  That seems likely to produce a whiplash injury when you're trying to retrieve your lockpick in a hurry.

Well if you have a druid or Ranger with wildshape you can smuggle pretty much anything you want in bulk.

Wildshap into the largest strongest thing you can. Have your party load you up with whatever it is and the wildshap back into your normal form.... go to dropoff and wildshape back into said beast and boom... there's your stuff.

As far as I know there isnt even a way to detect the items even if they are magic. Beware thrown objects by the DM out of game however.

There's nothing that beats the Wand of Hoard Gullet, and then eating the wand.
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

Two psionic options:

Personal Space ACF for Psion (Nomad)

Dimensional Pocket power

If you wanna minimize the impact on your build, a one-level dip into Psion (Nomad) ain't bad. The ACF increases in power based on your overall level, not just your Psion level or your manifester level. It'll also net you three powers, psionic focus, and open up other options to you.

All of those ACF's depend on Psion level, since they don't specify Character level
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!

Now now, his DM might be merely a dumbass.  There are plenty of them floating around that aren't actively malicious, but can't quite wrap their minds around anything out-of-the-ordinary working unless "a wizard did it."  They still suck to play with, but at least the ones that aren't screwing the non-magic characters out of pure spite can sometimes be re-educated.
