You know, I would include Explosive Runes on that list. I have my reasons.....

And really, it can be a potentially awesome spell in the right situations.

Cleric: Protection from Evil.

Druid: Animal Shapes/Shapechange. Summon Natural Ally?

Wizard: Hold Person. Contact Other Plane.

Fireball stopped being iconic in 3rd edition, it's iconness is just carryover from 1st and 2nd edition. In fact I'd be ROFLing in-character if a wizard/sorcerer casted a fireball at me.
It doesn't matter what it does (as long as it somehow inflicts fire damage). It wouldn't matter if scorching ray was called fireball. People just like casting a spell that's called fireball.

I think Lina prefers this one though, shame that the casting time is around a 1 round action

More like 2-3 rounds.
The mind transcends the body.
It's also a little cold because of that.
Please get it a blanket.

I wish I could read your mind,

"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

"Hadoken!"

Choosing the top 10 for Wizards was especially troublesome.  There are so many iconics.

Divine casters have less competition.
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

How can we forget Miracle for a cleric?
Some Cool Quotes:  [spoiler]
Quote from: unknown
Non-PC activities like out of combat healing should be left to wands and NPCs. It's not fun to play a walking wand of CLW. Likewise, being a combat wall is not a viable PC role. A Wall of Force could do that.

-Sort of, but you left out the important note that a Wall of Force does it better.

Quote from: Runestar / skydragonknight
The most powerful character is the one that you actually get to play.

Quote from: Operation Shoestring
I often have to remind people not to underrate divination.  The ability to effectively metagame without actually metagaming beats the ability to set things on fire more times than not.

"These spells ... [a]re associated so heavily with a class that their frequent use is expected..."

You're implying the posters in this thread responding to the topic title are people who know about the classes. Is this what you mean explicitly?

Else, pop-culturally (descending): Jesus/God?, prophetic, LotR (I've only read "The Hobbit" and I don't remember what Gandalf did), Harry Potter, the Force (Star Wars), Dragonlance, The Inheritance Cycle (Christopher Paolini), the People/fairy folk (did I use the right terminology for the latter? Artemis Fowl, Eoin Colfer), His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman)

It's part pop culture and part D&D.  When pop culture people think Wizard, they typically think fireball or teleport, not glitterdust or repulsion.

When D&D people think Wizard, the smart ones think glitterdust.

yeah, glitterdust is pretty damn iconic,  as well as damn pretty.

Those are the three tiers: 1. Pop-culture, 2. casual DND, 3. veteran DND (CO). The order is from romantic to classical; fantasy to mechanical; beautiful to functional; good-looking to the thing that works good;

I'd go with the pop cultural iconics myself.
Everyone relates, whereas the mechanically powerful ones are only recognized here, in CO.

One is slapstick, the other is awesome as defined by Hollywood.

Even though in a lot of video RPGs wizards lose this spell, in D&D, I'd still say lightning bolt is pretty iconic for a wizard.  There's that silly larp video with the guy casting "Lightning bolt!"

Also, as someone else said fly.

And dispel magic.  And identify and detect magic are also things I think of when I think of wizards casting spells.

I think Clutch of Orcus is very iconic of the sort of Evil Cleric thing.

That or I'm getting Evil Clerics confused with Darth Vader.  :P
