Floating disk = levitate taxi?
« on: January 13, 2010, 05:58:04 AM »
Can a caster transport himself via the spell *(tenser's) floating disk*???

The disk should be able to carry most casters without troubles, but can it be directed to move?

Relevant tidbit from the spell description:
Quote
If not otherwise directed, it maintains a constant interval of 5 feet between itself and you.

No, it just follows behind him.  You'll need Greater Floating Disk from the SpC (4th level) to do what you want.

OP just quoted something which strongly implies otherwise, JaronK

From the spell:

Quote
It floats along horizontally within spell range and will accompany you at a rate of no more than your normal speed each round.  If not otherwise directed, it maintains a constant interval of 5 feet between itself and you.

It just accompanies you.  Note that the "accompany" thing is what it normally does, and then if it's not following you like that (which is the "otherwise" direction) it just sits there.  Nothing in the spell allows it to be directed in any other way than to lead it around and thus let it follow, and if the rules don't say you can, then you can't.  Greater Floating Disk is designed to do what the OP is asking.  This is like asking if you can light grease on fire when there's a higher level spell that's just grease that can be lit on fire.

I would debate you but I can't see any way that would end well. I'll chalk it up to horrendously bad wording on WotC's part again.

Well, how can you sit 5ft away from yourself?

2. Define "you" in weird ways.

What if we had 2 Wizards with 2 Floating Disks, hmm?
I think they'd sit there hovering in space and staring at each other.

Is this whole thing reminding anyone else of a Monte Python skit? "We'll build this giant badger..." :lmao

Okay, let's say Alice the Wizard makes a Floating Disk and tells Bob the Wizard to stand on it. Then she walks away (while staying within her disk's range) and directs her disk not to follow her. Then, Bob makes a disk. Alice steps on it and then tells her disk to come to her, along with Bob. Can we somehow make the disks kind of push or pull each other along, like a pendulum effect or something? :D
EDIT: It doesn't say that the disk has to use the shortest path to follow you, or even that it's not allowed to pass you, only that it has to stay within 5' and not move faster than your speed. :plot

Also keep in mind that it only levitates 5 feet above the ground, so it can't help you make 'jumps'.

You know... after rereading it, I think I agree that it can carry you around.

Quote
If not otherwise directed, it maintains a constant interval of 5 feet between itself and you.

So following you around is what it does if not otherwise directed, which strongly implies that you can direct it to do something else, as long as it stays within range of you.

Three feet, actually. It's five feet away from you. [/nitpick]

Well honestly what is the ground?  And what about slopes and what not?  I could see some people trying to go up walls with this.

Come on, what else would it be?
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!
