Tactical insertion; how do I pump my touch attacks?
« on: December 31, 2009, 12:59:11 PM »
I will be playing a character that, due to fluff and houserules, is able to case a Silent Minor Image and a Ghost Sound that only affects that person when he touches somebody. Doing damage isn't necessarily important, however, being able to get close enough to touch somebody without dying, and subsequently touching them, is very important. How do I increase my ability to succeed on touch attacks?

Character level and built?

Build doesn't matter; it's completely undecided so far. Level is 6th.

In that case you might be best served by being a grappling character. Psychic Warrior is good for that and druid is also good.

Not to be mean but.... that ability kinda sucks....  it's like you're able to cast a level 1 spell and a level 0 spell, but in a more limited way!!!

Heck... gnome spell like abilities are more interesting, I mean, they can speak with animals, but only burrowing mammals....  that's a level 1 spell in a more limited way right there, but i'm not going to build my character around it...

Tell us what you want your character to do instead, no?

Yeah, I did a double-take too...

Maybe you could find some way to extend your reach? I assume you can't use this ability through a weapon, but there's stuff like Deformity (tall) and Aberrant Reach.

My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
[spoiler]Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.

From the way he phrased it, i'm pretty sure it's both
1. At will
2. Doesn't require him to make a touch attack for the specific purpose of this effect. Just to have touched him. Thus, hitting someone with an unarmed strike would probably work.

High Dex, high BaB.  Really touch attacks are near guaranteed past lvl 5.

Now would shadowcraft mage work with this ability?  Because it would just be rediculous, and I want to know.  If it did and you could then you could maybe cast Summon Monster every time you touch someone, but the monster can only affect the person you just touched.

Do they get a saving throw?  If so, what ability modifier is it keyed off of?  And I agree with the unarmed strike.  Punching someone in the face so hard they hallucinate seems like a great ability.  In fact, lets start stacking things on top of it.  How about a sword sage with the unarmed strike variant?  Or maybe a human paragon/monk for early entry into ur-priest and later sacred fist.  From there divine metamagic persist buffs and hit people so hard they're stunned and seeing things.

DM: Yes.

Touch of Golden Ice, too. I wonder if we can find some of those 'touch once per round' spells to make use of.

Yeah, I saw the title, skimmed through this thread, and found...

Yeah, the immature, juvenile portion of me loves this thread. :D

Pumping "touch attacks", extending his "reach", "deformity: long", "grappling". It can't get much more obvious with the double entendre.

Behind door number 2: A magic crown!
Behind door number 3: 4d6 giant bees, and THREE HUNDRED POUNDS OF HONEY!
They don't/haven't, was the point. 3.5 is as dead as people not liking nice tits.

Sometimes, their tits (3.5) get enhancements (houserules), but that doesn't mean people don't like nice tits.

Though sometimes, the surgeon (DM) botches them pretty bad...
Best metaphor I have seen in a long time.  I give you much fu.

Seven for the Barbarian-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Monks doomed to die,
One for the Wizard on his dark throne
