so please letme know what you think
« on: December 16, 2009, 06:54:28 PM »
so my group will be letting me play in a high level game as a birthday present next month since i am DM most of the time.  so we are starting at level 15 and i know i am playing a god caster and wanted to know what you guys think of this build:
Illumian
Wizard 1\ Archivist 3 \ Mystic Theurge 10 \ Contemplative 1

this is my starting point.  giving me 7 level divine spells and 6th level arcane spells. and 2 domains

what i am thinking as we head to maybe 20ish level going either contemplative 1 and arcane caster 4
leaving me with dual 8's my biggest question is do i go with 4 more levels of wizard for a 3rd domain or be a specialist wizard and go master specialist 1-2 arch mage 2-3.  and beside precocious apprentice what are some other good feat choices

and my thoughts on domains are knowledge and possibly death for the third one but not sure was looking for something a tad bit more inline with the knowledge seeker type personality

any suggestions welcome thank you in advance

If you want to be a dual-caster, consider an ur-priest/divine chord build. I don't have much experience with them, but you can google it, or someone else will explain eventually. :p
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
If you're willing to stomach the stench of Limburger, Ur-Priest can be treated as arcane, and then you can progress Ur and Sublime Chord.  Look for anklebite's true arcane dilettante thread.

Of the three things that god does, buffing, debuffing, and battlefield control, which two do you want to do?

If it was me, I'd try something like...

 Transmuter 3/Master Specialist 4/Incantrix 10/Fate Spinner 3

Also, if he's going the GOD route, don't forget War Weaver.  Buff with a move action, debuff or BFC with a standard, and whichever you didn't pick on #2, do with a swift.  Oh, and polymorph+Outsider type will give you the entire Cleric list if you're feeling "theurgy."  But if you wanna go over the top, my spellthief has a CL of 110 at level 20 ;)  And dual 9's, and untyped fire damage, and Reserves of Strength (110d6+440 from cold spell spec and blistering spell untyped ray with a spellwarped fireball = dead bad guy).

Where is war weaver anyway? I'm guessing Dragonlance or Faerun.

Heroes of Battle

Awesome book, but it's more for DMs.

 Transmuter 3/Master Specialist 4/Incantrix 10/Fate Spinner 3

Good plan we can drop Master Specialist entire and pick up either Domain Wizard or Spontaneous Divination instead. I kind of like Spontaneous Divination more.

 Transmuter 5/War Weaver 5/Incantrix 10

i know i didnt specify it in the OP but i was trying to stay away from evil since i dont know if its allowed just yet.  so no ur-priest tricks

i was planning on more buff and battlefield control to answer one question.  But as always i can always make room for a good debuff here and thier.  i was going with the dual casting from archivist for access to druid/cleric/ranger/paladin buff spells and i know i can deliever them with spectral hand ( i think is the spell name ) its a 2nd level necromancy spell.  more than jsut polymorph into a solar and go nuts with buffs and what little healing will be needed.

and if i went with a pure arcane build i would need at least one level of arch mage for mastery of shaping because it just rocks with waves of exhaustion and a melee heavy group witch i dont know of for sure but i am guessing will be the case.

thanks again

And lemme stop you right there, since Ur-Priests don't have to be evil ;)  The adaptation section includes variants for followers of dead gods or for those who are separated from their deity.  So no need to be evil :D

true but thats at least in my oppinion almost as cheesey and an arcane sword sage.  Not that i think thier is anything wrong with that i ussaly like when my players go super cheesey on me when i DM because then i get to make things even harder for them.  while its an option and a good one at that i still think Archivist with Dual ( more like tripple 8s because i will have easy access to druid spells for my prayer book ) is a better fit for the RP side of this charector ( going for a seeker of ancient knowledge more than an over powering god type)

Somewhere near the black hat, maybe :D  Especially since it got a War Weaver Arcane Archer 9th level spells and 16 BAB.

If you not gonna go for full dual casting, then I'd avoid it. Domain wizard into war weaver is nice if you can get in at level 6. That covers your buffing. Iot7FV can help in the battlefield control department.

thats a good idea. i really liked the idea of the archivist wizard dual wizard.  and i havent been able to abuse precocious apprentice in a good long while.  so that build is another option i will consider

just looked at Io7fv again and the prerequisits are a bit ruff. mostly is thier and abjiration spell that allows a save? and if so is it owrth casting.  SPell focuse and greater spell focus on abjuration seems like dead feats to me.  although i know the class is nasty

Spell Focus Abjuration is generally regarded as an entirely worthless feat. Antimagic Ray, Banishment, Disjunction, Maw of Chaos (!!), and Vertigo are the only remotely usable Abjurations I know of that allow a save. Maw of Chaos, however, is wonderful.

That is why iot7v is often pair with master specialist to get the necessary feats. Also because you can take all levels of both prestige classes and they work well together.
