Spell compendium has cloud of bewilderment, which nauseates on a failed fort save (which is the real bummber). Works wonders with sculpt spell (is there a spell which doesn't?). Had some success against spellcasters.  :smirk

2nd lv conjuration. Why the heck does conjuration get so much of the good stuff? It was an evocation in PGTF!!!  :mad

Colour spray is fairly useful as well, provided you are willing to wade in close.

Enlarge person could theoretically be construed as a control spell, if you cast it on a fighter and have him clog up that narrow walkway... :p
A clear conscience is the surest sign of a failing memory.

A strategy I'm quite fond of with silent image: create an illusory picture (a sheet or film) of what you want the opponent to see and stick it right in front of their eyes. Even if they make the save to disbelief, they're still blind, disoriented, at some point sickened/nauseated (he projected the image of the world spinning around them), and shambling about making them easy targets for the fighter and rogue.

If you're in a 10ft wide corridor, snaking Spirit Wall down the corridor is a good way of ensuring that meleers never get to you.  Just make sure the last segment of wall isn't facing towards you, so you're not in range of the fear effect.

Heck any situation where you can put multiple layers of spirit wall between enemies and you is great.

that sounds like good tactics.. but i think thats probably out of the range of the abilities of this spell.

Not really. Spell parameters are define really openly so there's nothing stopping you from creating illusory visuals for so long as they're within the area of the spell. Even then, creating a pitch black blindfold definitely within spell parameters.

If you haven't yet, I highly recommend reading Treantmonk's guide. He went through all the schools and listed useful spells to stare at, and he's a battlefield controlling wizard type guy making the build.

http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19873034/Treantmonks_guide_to_Wizards_Being_a_God

"God" in this case is the battlefield controller, buffer or debuffer.

He also lists a couple builds and rates feats/PRCs. Definitely worth sitting down and reading.

I also second Stinking Cloud and Glitterdust. My GM makes sad puppy faces when I play wizards. :)

(Of course, he's making sadder puppy faces now that I'm playing a dungeoncrashing/trip/bullrush fighter who's turn ends when no foes are alive in his threat range. >.>)

Usually the other way around for me.  Evoc is my first ban, and my second is a tossup between Nec and Ench.

Could you explain how that works?

Creates a 20'/level long by 5' wide wall of force at any angle, the only restriction being that both ends must be anchored securely.

As long as there's some terrain variation (or something like a ceiling), you can use this to great effect.

Not so useful on constant density planes with uniform gravity, but neither is web.

I hate sleep.  That one round casting time ruins it for me.

summon or have a way to beat your own concealment
A really fun trick to play on creatures that have True Seeing is to cast Fog Cloud modified by the Invisible Spell metamagic feat. No slot adjustment, either.
Hmm is there a way to tell see both normally and with the true seeing? Because if not, and true seeing overrides your normal vision, then that is every doppleganger's (or druid/polymorphing wizard's) best initial concealment :)
