Personally i'd go with an Archivist. You can summon more creatures, buff your creatures, etc etc...its just a great way to go.

Do they absolutely NEED to be alive?  I mean, I'm always a fan of stuffing the undead into a bag of holding.  Play a cleric and either make or capture (rebuke) more powerful undead and stuff them into the bag of holding too.
DM: The iron door is enchanted with a powerful anti-magic barrier.
Zavy: The door itself?
DM: Yes.
Zavy: I get acid flasks and a pry bar.  I just found myself a new tower shield.

archivist does have so many applications its mind-boggling, I hadn't thought of it but it could be the way to go.

As for using undead, as I stated in my first post I'm hoping to avoid it, although it does solve a lot of storage problems. It does open up the possibility of holding uncontrolled skeletons inside and "firing" them at your enemies by turning the bag inside out though. Perhaps undead in BoH for easy access and Warbeasts in Enveloping Pits to be taken out when needed. For those of you unfamilier with MMII, Warbeast gives some nice boosts to any Animal, Beast, or Vermin, and makes them purchaseable at 100 gp + 75gp per HD. So dire animals, monstrous scorpions, and the like are all purchaseable at very reasonable rates ( CR-wise, often cheaper than skellies)

Not so much storage, but a fun thing to do with minions from my Iron Chef 2 entry:

Character (important parts): Male Human, Cleric 4/Ordained Champion 5/Sovereign Speaker 5/Contemplative 1
Key abilities: Channel Spell, Many domains(including Spell)
Spells typically Prepared: Death Throes x4(2 5th-level slots and 2 6th-level slots), Flame Strike(5th-level domain)
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

Enveloping Pit- if only UMD coulf emulate a specific religion, this would be gold. The item description doen't say how long it takes to unfold normally, nor does it mention it in Portable Hole, so idk how the mechanics would work in combat.
The item says it takes a swift action to use in the stat block. The religion BS just lets you open it from a distance, which is not worth the cost anyway. So anyone within 1 step of LE can use this thing as a cheap 50' deep portable hole that you can open and close as a swift action. What's not to love?

Also, it's so f'n big, you can actually build a tower down into the thing, which is what we've done in the "Way of the Wizard" PbP game on here. I plan on stuffing undead in there, and since they don't need to breathe that won't be an issue. If you absolutely have to have messy living minions, you'll need to basically turn it into a stable and include a Bottle of Air or something.
[spoiler]
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

And there is nothing from stopping you from putting MORE pits inside of it. the 'bad things happen' rule for extra dimensional space only mentions Bags of Holding inside the Pit, not Pits inside of Pits. That's what I'm doing for my Artificer, and keeping a construct army in there.

Biggest problems seems to be getting them out though. How do you do that quickly?

No, because I can't perceive it. :\

On a similar note... what's the rule for getting OUT of a enveloping pit?

Transdimensional Magical Sensor of some sort? Or did you mean needing line of sight?  Eye of Power can give you LoS, but Eye of power is a 9th level spell.  And then there's still line of effect....

Ring Gate? I don't see why you need it, though. Can't you just open the pit(s)? Hell, the ones inside could be left open all the time, right?

Can I? I don't know what the action to get out of the pit is.

I've made good use of your "Tower in a Hole" idea in my current Bonnie and Clyde style Eberron Game. We've got a secret base hidden in the False Bottom(CS) of a Nondescript Box(AEG). If people manage to find and open the Nondescript box they'll see some cheap adventuring gear with a few embarrassing adult toys "hidden" beneath the gear. Simple and amazingly awesome.

Pick up an Enveloping pit whenever possible!

You can just leave the ones "inside" the "outer" one open all the time. You can reduce the size of the opening down to 1 foot across, or up to 10 feet, or anywhere in between. So it could be like a piece of extradimensional swiss cheese.
