It may be a Longshot...
« on: November 27, 2009, 04:15:53 AM »
I'm a pursuer of the less controllable arts. I'm talking, of course, about LUCK. I love the stuff. Good or bad, it always seems to sneak up on you.

So, I issue a challenge. Try and come up with the luckiest character possible.
A few rules apply:

1.)Use only 3.5e books.
2.)Try and make the character lucky throughout their progression, not just at the end.
3.)Try and make them playable in the average campaign.
4.)Flaws are allowed. OR you can take feats on level one and on even levels (2,4,6,8,etc. (this is how my campaign is set up))
5.)Have fun with it. It's meant to be a somewhat silly character.

I'll be working on a few builds myself, which I will post on here as I go.
I don't recall the part of Kamehameha where people launched redwoods at each other.

http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=2994.0 isn't so much a build in itself than a trick to keep in mind.

There are two ways of doing this that I can see. Either you make your character very, very powerful with high modifiers in everything and simply roleplay it all as a luck or then get a bunch of rerolls. I suppose there is a third way, combining the two first ones.

My idea is that you take a Cloistered Cleric, make good use of Pride domain to help with your saves, get Luck domain for the reroll, use Divine insight and Guidance of the avatar, get Choose destiny at level 17 and persist it. I suppose fear auras and passive debuffs like that could be explained by you being lucky enough to dodge all the blows.

The most luck-themed build can think of is a Halfling Bard 5/Fortune's Friend (CS) 5/Luckstealer (RoW) 10 with as many [Luck] feats as possible (which is a lot with your houseruled feat progression). It's not super optimized, but would probably be fun.

Bard 5/Fortune's Friend 4/Luckstealer 1/Sublime Chord 2/Luckstealer +8 has a little bit more casting and pretty much all the goodies of the first build, plus a 9th level spell.

Both builds get much much better if your DM allows you to power Luck feats with your Luck pool from the Luckstealer class, which seems pretty reasonable to me. You'll need to just go ahead and roll 2d20 for pretty much everything.

Good [Luck] feats - you have to take at least one to get into Fortune's Friend, which gives you 2 more:
Advantageous Avoidance
Better Lucky than Good
Dumb Luck
Fortuitous Strike
Lucky Start
Make your Own Luck
Survivor's Luck
Tempting Fate
Unbelievable Luck

Make sure to get Lucky Streak as a spell known. And wield a Luck Blade.

Interestingly enough I was just thinking about making a character built around Arcane Thesis: Unluck.

Wild Mage also adds a lot of erm, chance to things.

Halfling Diviner 5 (luck domain granted power)/Luckstealer6/Wild Mage9.

Important feats: Insightful Divination, Third Time's the Charm, Unbelievable Luck, Dumb Luck.

The Sir Guide to Gishborn had a build that was mainly centered around luck, called the Fortune Teller (as in you tell fortune what to do).

Find a way to get access to action points, then take a few feats for them. Adding 1d6/1d8 to everything can boost you up a bit.

I dare anyone to find a hole in that logic.

Chaos gnome cleric with luck and destiny domains/binder/knight of the sacred seal or divine anima mage

bind balam or whoever it is that gives you a reroll. As many times as possible. And then cast the destiny 9 spell and you can probably just keep rerolling things.

This kind of thing makes me wanna use that prestige Hexblade that was around a little while back.

These are some good ideas. I have a build almost completed. It is mostly a good opportunity for RP, but it can dole out the harshness in its own ways.
