That's one way of doing it, certainly.  Honestly, the method doesn't matter too much as long as you find out what you need to know.  Doing the binary mapping just reduces your writing a little.

That's of course dependent on the algorithm you use.

Technically, you could also ask the spell to run through a series of questions and spit out the final answer in 1 question.

eg.
"Starting from qn 1, what is the final answer to this series of questions assuming all the questions were answered accurately?"
qn1: Are all the enemies in the dungeon we're about to enter 'creatures'?
If yes, goto qn2, if no, goto qn3
qn2: Do they have bad will saves?
If yes...
qnX: Do <...> ?
If yes, then answer "X", if no, goto qn Y.

Yeah, given the 1e version of Intelligence as a comparison ...
the idea is an Int of 10 = an I.Q. of 100
so ... and Int of 20 = an I.Q. of 200

This means an Int of 23 = higher than Marilyn Vos Savant
who couldn't find anything else to do with her big "brains" than getting married and writing a column in a senior citizen publication.

This means an Int of 24 = the start of the Singularity.

minor tangent - 4e fixes this via ...
Detect Magic is on the Arcana skill, as in at-will, and not even magical.
Then at level 16, you take the Divination Ritual, that basically is a 3e 9th level Divination spell.
Going from level 0 to level 9 spells as a flip.
Silly, and can do exactly what TML is posting.
Kinda fun.

Because the 1e comparison sure is valid.

Has anyone ever played in a game where this was allowed at all? I know that if any of my players ever tried to do that, they'd get "random answer right away"

Why not ask them not to do it, or ban the spell, instead of being a dickhead?
[spoiler]
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

I don't even have to ask because no one I play with has ever attempted it.

It's a bit of a non issue for me personally, since the only time I DMed a diviner he kept asking the wrong questions and trying to invent gunpowder.

dress like a monk or a rouge or whatever
wearing makeup doesn't stop a GM from targeting you.  people play female wizards too, yanno.

Did someone say " ... rou G e ... "
