Personally, I wouldn't spend so much money on equipping mooks, considering that they will fall like flies to the first AoE spell and it will be like striking the jackpot for the party looting them afterwards. Instead, I would attach a spellcaster to each contingent loaded with scrolls and wands for buff/support/healing.

I like the idea of using warblades. Steel wind for hitting multiple foes, charging minotaur for mobility and moment of precise mind for some resilience vs sleep. Give them masterwork eq to highlight how well they are equpped, perhaps?

For ranged attacks, choose a race that grants a bonus ranged weapon prof, like elf?

For eq, I am thinking potions (I know no magic items but). They would be a cheap means of effectively boosting an npc's power (using spells like enlarge person, bull's str, prot from alignment). Or maybe cheap eternal wands?

A clear conscience is the surest sign of a failing memory.
