Having extensive training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu I can say this is exactly how grappling works. You stop a guy on the street, hand him a couple of dice and start rolling. Then you throw a few random modifiers from your head and if you win you can push him down and take his wallet. This is the way I finance my living.

Win :lmao

well, could you point out a few of it's flaws, I did 6 years of Judo, and I though it was an accurate reflection of what would happen if a tall dude tried to grapple a dude holding a sword.

I think the tall dude would get stabbed, personally. So yeah, seems pretty accurate.

A friend of mine, blue belt at the moment, gave a description of Judo once: "You spend 15 minutes trying to grab the sleeve of the other guy while avoiding his attempts to grab your sleeve." I told him he should cast Hold person.

Most likely. It takes a lot of patience to grapple someone with a weapon, we do this at least once every few months. You essentially have to wait until they can't make an AoO. Though until there is a good system for assessing damage to a single body part/limb you can't have really accurate grapple rules. Punches/Kicks = Hurt your opponent Grappling=Disabling your opponent.

If a judo match is lasting 15 minutes there is a major issue besides the fact that they each only know 1 throw.

Tshern's flawless victory.

Grappling could be disabling your opponent. The problem is that if you want to walk away from the situation, you don't want the guy to get up before you.

I've trained in Judo myself, and I can safely say that if you spend 15 minutes in a judo match both guys are doing something wrong. Seriously.

Also, a few years in kenjutsu have taught me that the best way to grapple someone with a blade is to wait until he tries to attack, grab his hand, disarm him and either hold it to his neck or stab him in the back (for those that would argue this isn't honorable, the kata that simulates this assumes your opponent got first draw and lunged at you first, so fair is fair).

Well, I think the best way to grapple someone with a blade is to shoot him in the leg with a gun, and when he falls over, you take his sword and then pin him.

I consider the best strategy to be shooting the attacker to the face and then grabbing a vicious armlock to make sure he won't make another lunge at me.

+1. That's what he gets for bringing a knife to a gun fight.

Deathwatch as an [Evil] spell in 3.5.  It strikes me as a victim of find-and-replace.

Sleep and Deep Slumber each having a 1-full-round casting time in 3.5.  Wait, so an area of effect spell isn't going to go off until everybody else has already moved, no doubt leading to results reminiscent of those of a bad FFT player?

Many of the 3.5 spell alterations have rationales presented in Dragon Magazine... and then other spells are changed to have the same problem, sometimes even at a lower level.  For example:

  • Hold Person was both too powerful and shut down the player totally, so they hit it hard with the nerfstick by introducing the "save ends" mechanic.  That way, it's unreliable and a player under its effects is guaranteed to at least get to roll a die on their turn.  Fair enough...
  • ...except that at the same time, they made (Tasha's) Hideous Laughter last 1 round/level instead of a flat 1d3 rounds, without the "save ends" mechanic.  Did I mention that Hideous Laughter has a chance to affect non-humanoids?  And is lower-level?

  • Fly's duration was cut from 10 minutes/level to 1 minute/level and its movement rate cut from 90' to 60' out of a perception that it was a super-powerful combat buff, not a utility spell, with Overland Flight being added to help fill in the gap created...
  • ...yet 3.5 Alter Self suddenly reversed course on its ability to grant flight, changing from making you an extremely wussy and clumsy flier if the form has wings to being able to grant a fly speed of up to 120'!

Those are what pop to mind, anyway.  -- Pteryx

I am pretty sure you decide where the AoE is when the spell finally goes off, not at the time of casting. Only bummer is that if the foes know you are casting sleep (say via a successful spellcraft check), they will spread out rather than stay bunched together.
A clear conscience is the surest sign of a failing memory.
