Pimping out your Animal Companion
« on: September 26, 2009, 12:02:37 AM »
I'm playing a supermount build in a couple days, and have this totally amazing Fleshraker that I'm riding... With no feats. He is a beast already, even without them, but what could make him better? I'm shooting arrows off his back at the moment.

Like the leaves of the forest when Summer is green,
That host with their banners at sunset were seen:
Like the leaves of the forest when Autumn hath blown,
That host on the morrow lay withered and strown.

How are you building your supermount character. I assume it is not with the traditional paladin5/beastmaster1/wild plains outrider 1/ halfling outrider 10 as you have to be able to choose the mount as a paladins mount.

As for feats I would recommend some martial study/stance feats to make your fleshraker even more awesome.

don't forget to take unarmed strike, for even more attacks when you pounce.

add on improved grapple to make that aspect more dangerous.

and to top it all off, add on deflect arrows.

"Quick! shoot down that rampaging dinosaur!!!!"
"We can't sir! it keeps blocking our arrows with its' kung-fu!"
I do not suffer from paranoia; I enjoy every second of it.

This thread would be an excellent starting point.

My picks: Martial Study (something)/Martial Stance (Island of Blades) on a mount means if you ride up next to something, it's auto-flanked. Power Attack/Leap Attack/Imp. Bull Rush/Shock Trooper is great if your mount is charging anyway (and if you have the feats to spare). Imp. Bull Rush/Shock Trooper can be skipped if you're planning on casting Find the Gap, Wraithstrike or True Strike and sharing it with your AC.

Other than that, apply the Warbeast template, unless your animal companion has already been type-changed by Paladin Mounthood or whatever.

When I read 'Pimping out your animal companion,' I thought the thread was about...

Err...

...Something else.

[edit] Also, to be on-topic, I'm fairly sure the warbeast template is gained through training.

Warbeast takes a month of making DC 25 Handle Animal checks. It'd be silly not to be able to apply it to an Animal Companion! It's also the only template I know of that adds a HD...

Multiheaded template adds 2 (maybe 3) HD per head, though I doubt your DM will let you add that through training. :p

To stop arrows I suggest some barding with an armour crystal of arrow deflection - a lesser crystal is 2,500gp for +5 AC against ranged.
