Pretty sure this argument already went over at the wizards boards and they got a designer to say they didn't intend for psicrystals to work that way. If the DM allows it that would be useful, though.
-Characters-
Samuel Belmont, NG Human Strong/Fast/Martial Magus 8. Crafter of awesome swords and haver of ideas that don't work.
Staren - Human NG Smart/Conjurer 2. Future savior of the multiverse. Prime directive? What's that?
Fate - 4E G Wizard 2. Little girl, big magic power.
Staren (again) -  NG Human Paragon/Fighter/Evoker/Havoc Mage 9. Eager biter of adventure hooks.
Red Mage - NG Cansin Factotum 5. Breaker of the wrong fourth wall.

What they said was "while we didn't intend for it to work that way, as the rules are currently written it explicitly does".

Even if he will just allow you to swap out the Alertness feat for Mindsight (once you hit 5th level), it can be incredibly useful. There are a couple of "tricks" that can be used to do this.

Even without mindsight, psicrystals can make awesome scouts. I'd definitely find out about how you replace one, though. If he says you take the XP hit as you would for losing a familiar, I might not risk it.

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.

What's mindsight?

After further discussion with the DM he decided UMD/UPD use by familiars/psicrystals was okay after all.

It's a feat from Lords of Madness that lets you sense the location of any thinking creature (int 1+) within range of your telepathy.

The (wo?)man has a point. And constructs don't even get a feat like the undead do.

But that's why you take the Shape Soulmeld feat and then take Share Soulmeld. It never says construct 'familiars' can't use YOUR soulmelds. But that's a bit physhie.

If you can get access to scrolls and UMD/UPD, you can always make a Haunt Shifted pet.  Consider having a dead feline of at least 10 HD, animating it, and then Haunt Shifting it (using some holy arrows) into a Huge cat-like statue body that's hardened a great deal (I know there's a great Psion power for hardening).  Make sure that you've used Permanent Shrink Item on the body first.  Now you have a nearly indestructable tiny cat that can turn into a huge cat at will.  Fun!

Related to this: Can Tiny creatures be useful in combat? If they can be that might justify getting a Wild Cohort rather than just a regular pet.
I can't really see how a tiny wild cohort would be useful in combat, no.

You could have an awakened Ioun stone :lmao
A player once asked me if there was any way to make a Tarrasque more evil... 3 sessions later he was stoned with D20s as the PC led an exidus out of the path of a Dire Tarrasque of Legendary Wonder.
