Looking for help with a Template
« on: August 28, 2009, 03:31:20 PM »
Hi Guys,

I am a long time Lurker of these boards and have found them a very useful resource in creating my characters over the years. Recently, I have joined a new group starting up a game playing the Shackled City adventure path. There are six of us, with 3 of use being Min/max-ers that i have played with before and 3 others that take it more as a large joke. I am playing a StrongHeart Halfling wizard. The DM allows LA buy-off as per the UA rules (but with a max of +2) and I would like to take advantage. I looked once more through Trentmonk's Wizard Guide but came up dry on a good template to use. Do you guys have any suggestions?

I have access to most material but the DM has banned Psionics, Dragonlance, Complete Divine, and ToB. I have a good stat block of 18, 16, 15, 13, 10, 8.

Thanks in advance!

Agahii

Necropolitan from LM. No stat bumps but d12 hd, and undead immunities(LA+0 but costs 3000 gold and a levels of xp I believe). Take the dragon feat to add Int to HP (if dragon mag is allowed).

If you still want a +2 template Im not sure, theres not many good ones for a wiz.

Half-fey from the Fiend Folio is dynamite for +2 LA. It works slightly better with a sorcerer, since the SLA save DCs are Cha-based, but it's still decent for a wiz.

Dragonborn might be better, though, and that's LA+0.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

Which sort of wizard are you planning to be? That's what really determines template choice.

No psionics means no Phrenic template.

The Dark template could make you better at hiding. Not getting noticed is always nice. I'd say to look at the Master Template List and combine it with another +1 template, but the new wizards boards are totally borked.

Gravetouched Ghoul? It would let you spellstitch yourself :)

Dragonborn might be better, though, and that's LA+0.

Dragonborn would also get rid of his racial bonus feat.

Take the dragon feat to add Int to HP (if dragon mag is allowed).

This is called Faerie Mysteries Initiate and is in Dragon 319, if you're curious.

Thanks for the Replies. I will look into the Half Fey or necropolitan Templates. The build is Conjurer 5, incantatrix 3, mindbender 1, incantatrix 7, master conjurer 1, arcmage 3. We have a Malconvoker, a Beguiler, and a cleric in the party so i will be able to take more advantage of the 2nd level ability. The malconvoker especially in that I can twin one of his summon spells that already has fiendish legion ability for 4 monsters. I think the Necropolitian + evolved templates would be magical. Especially if i can add it retro actively.

You can. You can't actually start out as a necropolitan, as you lose a level plus some more XP in the process, and if it drops you below 0 you die permanently (i.e. don't come back as a necropolitan). The evolved undead template is also something added on top of a pre-existing undead creature, but the fluff might make it hard to get, depending on your DM.

I find that Draconic with Necropolitan added later is fun. Then go to Evolved Undead and Swarmshifter -- which are both no LA but also intended for monsters as well. In Dungeonscape there's a template that let's you become host to a swarm. I had a reoccuring villian planned out for a campaign that slowly became like Imhotep -- first a human, then a Necropolitan, then a swarmhost then a swarmshifter. Fun stuff.

Just to let you know.

I'm not sure what you mean here. No LA is not the same as LA +0. I thought Evolved Undead was +1 LA per time you take it, and Swarmshifter was no LA (LA - ), which means it's for "monsters" only (not PCs).

Phaedrus is correct; Evolved Undead is +1 LA per application, and anything with LA -- is not for PCs.

If you're willing to consider a +3 LA, Spellwarped from MM3 is rather nice: Stat adjustments (including +4 Int!), spell resistance, and bonuses when a spell overcomes your resistance are the main draws.
