Forms that Grant Spellcasting
« on: August 24, 2009, 07:13:33 AM »
Think of this as an extension of the Polymorph thread ; I would like to compile a list of all forms that offer spellcasting capability.  Expanded racial HD work too.

Well known
Astral Deva (Cleric)
Planetar (Cleric)
Solar (Cleric)

Slightly Obscure[/u]
Bozak Draconian (sorcerer level=HD, arguably the best gish ever made if LA buyoff is allowed, even moreso than a Mystic Ranger).

The more the merrier!

My PrC Pally Trickery (coming soon!)

Well...

There's those 2 Hobgoblin subspecies in MM5, as wel as the Kuo-Toa one (wizard and cleric, respectively);

Ethergaunts in Fiend Folio (wizard);

Dragons (sorcerer with cleric access)(notably the Tome Dragon from Dragon Magazine);

And from the SRD, BoED, and MM2 there's this list:

Outsider: Angels (cleric)(like you already posted); Trumpet Archon (cleric 14), Firre Eladrin (boed, cleric 12), Ursinal Guardinal (boed, wizard 12), Lillend (bard 6), Sylph (mm2, sorcerer HD+4), Arcanaloth (mm2, sorcerer 12), Couatl (sorcerer 9), Rakshasa (sorcerer 7), Lammasu (cleric 7 plus two domains of good/healing/knowledge/law), Formian Queen (sorcerer 17),

Magical Beast: Aranea (sorc 3), Androsphinx (cleric 6)

Monstrous Humanoid: Abeil Queen (mm2, druid 16), Spell Weaver (mm2, sorcerer HD+2)

Elemental: Air Weird (mm2, sorcerer 18 + domains air/travel as sorc spells), Earth Weird (as Air Weird except earth/destruction domains), Fire Weird (as Air except fire/sun), Water Weird (as Air except water/healing), Immoth (mm2, sorcerer 12 + can't cast fire spells),

Dragon: Gray Linnorm (mm2, cleric 17, destruction/evil domains), Dread Linnorm (mm2, sorcerer 18)

Fey: Nymph (druid 7)

Hope this helps :)

Ethergaunts also grant Wizard spellcasting, in addition to giving you some immense bonus to int.

I do not suffer from paranoia; I enjoy every second of it.

One day I wanted to have such a list, and I compiled the info from MM1-MM5 and Fiend Folio. I want to post it as a seperate thread though; it wasn't aimed specifically at polymorphing, but also as a tool for DMs (i.e. HD+LA+CR included). I wasn't sure there was demand for it, but if you want me to post it, I will. I'm lacking info on domain access, though (if that is important).

edit: Interestingly, I sorted my tables according to type, too. So somehow, that must make sense :P

Thanks for the turnout guys, and I can't believe I didn't throw in ethergaunts in the first post...given that I reference them in my Warmage guides.

Suzerain, by all means post that list!

They're also so butt-ugly that they need to wear a mask or anyone who looks them in the face takes Wis damage (or drain, can't remember).
No, seriously.
Wow,  I had never noticed the ethergaunt.  It certainly looks like an interesting race for a player although more for sorcerors or druids.  I think I'll make a savage progression for it.

Chronotyryn from Fiend Folio casts as a 12 level Sorcerer.  I'm surprised no one brought it up already.  ;)
