Allomancy
« on: July 10, 2009, 01:11:46 AM »
I just got done reading the Mistborn trilogy (written by Brandon Sanderson the man taking over Robert Jordans Mantle) and thought that it would make an a good RPG, or at least a good alternate magic system to be put into a d20 game.

So I was wondering if anyone know of a mistborn/misting/feruchemist classes out there?

I already know of the Mistborn RPG coming out but I was looking for something more immediate, to the point that I have started stating out some homebrew of myself on mistings and the like(I'll probably post those on these boards along with the wizards classes board).

I don't believe there is actually a system for those 3 specifically, though there is probably some similar flavour.

It would be hard to actually set something like that up though, because of the reliance on metals. It makes for good BBEGs, however. I know this because my group is still talking about the dude who had metal control and spikes through his eyes.

I find Brian Sanderson is a good person to cannibalize ideas from.
Witty sayings? Nah, not right now. Currently playing Dwarf Fortress and League of Legends. I really recommend League of Legends.

Oh my God! That's so weird. Yesterday me and my friend were talking about how cool it would be to do a Mistborn game. Allomancy and Feruchemy is so cool. Great magic. I'm reading the books too : )

I don't understand why it would be hard because of reliance on metals. All the Allomancers had to have vials of metal shavings. It would just be something you would have to stock up on regularly. The only really expensive metal is Atium and the vials are very light weight, allowing you to carry many.

Actually it would be even easier for Mistings, they only need one metal to burn.

And Feruchemists just have to wear the metal.

Everyone would want to be a Mistborn of course and as a GM you would have to decide how to work it out. Perhaps making it where they can only use two powers at first until they level up. Or making them roll very high to see if they can, then proceed as mentioned above. Or outlawing any of them being Mistborn to make it real interesting.

If I had to be a Misting, I think I'd be a Tineye, they are pretty cool.

I suggested a Mistborn type game that happened before the Fall of the Final Empire...or perhaps just after it's fall. Begin the Characters as Mistings working for a noble whose obligators have knowledge of hemalurgy then giving your mistings extra powers as they progress through your adventure.
If at the end you wish for Ruin to have some control over them they can remove their spikes and use their higher levels for battle...even with koloss.
Besides everyone would so rather be a feruchamist anyways..... And Cajun....I am not your friend....your embarrasing me.
Nothing quite like baby stew......

OKay, I'm BARELY into the series (as you know PoliosRevenge and Cajun), but so far it seems like what you would need to do is designate a "spell list" or at least common actions an Allomancer could do-- designate which abilities go with each of the 11 metals, and then use the different metals as a point pool.

Steel - 48
Iron - 38
Copper - 12
Pewter - 8

You could do Pewter Enchanced Strength-- "I burn 4 Points of Pewter to use my Low Strength Boost. This will give me a temporary +1 to my Str score. Or do I want to burn all 8 Points of Pewter and get that +2 to my Strength for using Medium Strength Boost."

"I burn Steel for 8 points to Push myself into the air with my Jump after I drop this coin."

You would need to determine how much of any given metal would be in a dose.

I haven't made much progress into making the classes, ( I haven't put the most effort into it either in the last week or so) but the metal pools was the way I was planning on doing it, with different metals being consumed at different rates, and probably also adding a allomancy skill to see how much juice they can pull from their metals.

The books say there are 16 total metals, and the wiki and web state 18(8 lower, 8 higher, 2 god), I was leaning towards the second one, and both the lower and higher metals are split in to two groups on four, I was thinking I would make each group of 4 into a base class at first, but alot of the metals don't do much aluminum and duralumin have no use for mistings; electrum and gold have minimal to no benifit; I can't see much advancement for chromium(not in books), nicrosil(not in books), copper and bronze; while I can see room for bendalloy(not in books) and cadmium(not in books) I can't see them being a 20 lvl class.  I'd also want all characters to be able to dabble into allomancy without a serious lvl comintment so I thought feats may be in order, as of now through a lesser bloodline feat, that would allow you to take a feat to use one of the lower metals to some small benefit, or take a stronger bloodline feat which would allow access to the higher and atium.

So I came up with a break down like this

Physical Misting (Pewter, Tin, Steel, Iron) 20 lvl Base Class

Emotional Misting (Brass and Zinc) 20 lvl Base Class

Temporal Misting (Bendalloy, Cadmium, and maybe atium[also the only class I have 90% done]) 5 lvl PrC

Enhancement Misting (Nicrosil and Chromium) 3 lvl PrC

Divining Misting(Copper, and Bronze) 5 lvl PrC

Mistborn 10 lvl PrC

Ferchemist 20 lvl base class

Keeper 10 lvl PrC

Gold, Electrum, Duralumin and aluminum mistings would be a second or third tier feat.

For class features I'm thinking of taking a more D20 modern or ToB look at it and makeing trees in each class that they pick which abilities they gain from the class, with mistborn having access to all trees(and abilities granted from the misting feats), but making them weaker in any one than a specialist misting in that field.

Didn't read it-- don't care to either since Modern is all I need to run any game I can imagine.

Now if they have a good system for Allomancy and Feruchemy, I'll be interested in stealing it wholesale and using it for a d20M system version of the Mistborn setting.

Just finished this series myself and the first thing I thought of was that this would be cool in a 3.5 setting.  Has anyone done any more work on this?

It would be very interesting to see the magic system, if done correctly, put to good use in a nice campaign. lots of new rules would need to be implemented. I know cajun and i cant wait haha.

Shit, I don't know what that even means. I need to expand my knowledge of books, I know only three basic systems. d20 modern, 3.5, and 4E. I really don't need to bog my mind down with all the crap though, I like to keep it simple.

They have already said it will not be a D20 based system for Mistborn and the only mechanic in Spycraft 2.0 that was horked was the Gadget/Gear system. The classes, skills, and combat were nice and tight.

Good that it isn't d20-based. Spycraft 2.0 was a bloated, convoluted mess (all of it). I think the only thing I took away from reading it was the idea of Dynamic Events, whatever they were called -- rules for running chase scenes, seductions, whatever. Basically an ur-example of how to handle the things that 4e's Skill Challenges still can't get right.

Hmm, I'll have to look into this system myself so I can form my own opinions. So far though, the evidence seems stacked against it.

Well at any rate, surely they won't fuck up a system for Mistborn? I mean for Christ sake the series pushed the author into legend already, that and finishing The Wheel of Time. So surely they would want to do an awesome job.
