Where is that ruling, Vinom?  I've never heard of it  :D
It was a house rules thing, working on the fact that it was scaled that way for a lot of creatures you could summon with summon monster.

I never cheat, Misread things yes. Even if it is horrible (in last 3 session's I've had 4 chars die from bad rolls). 1 death was 3 undead paladin things all crit on me. 1 death was failing a balance check and falling into a pile of dire wolves. 1 death from my head turning into a flying Vargul thing(failed save). 1 death from wizard in party crit failing and bad luck on my part from drawing Spell instead targets ally from crit fumble deck. Try eating a fireball when you were about to die anyway.

I roll alot of 1-5's. My dm has laughed so hard he started crying. I keep in good spirit and enjoy the colorful events of my deaths. Can't be uber all the time :)

I tend to roll at the extremes.  Either I'm "hot," and rolling crits all night, or...well, there was one night where my average d20 roll for the evening was lower than my average d4 roll.

I don't cheat while playing.  I have made occasional mistakes (the most recent being taking a ToB maneuver without the prereq), which I try to correct as soon as I find out.  I just wouldn't have fun playing the game if I started lying about the dice rolls or deliberatlely misleading people to think the rules work differently.

Plus, I really like making characters, so if my PC gets killed because of a bad roll, I'll just make a new one and move on. ;)

I've had problems as a DM with at least two players habitually cheating in the past.  It was most annoying because of how it affected the other players.  As a DM, I can deal with cheating...

circumstance modifiers to AC are a real pain to deal with  :smirk

actually did that to player i could see was cheating, the monster had a +10 circumstance modifier to AC for the circumstance of a cheating player. When they asked why the other person hit and they didn't with the same AC rolled i told them, they got pissed and quite.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

That's not too far off what happened in my game.  I figured he'd hit so many times when he should have missed, that it wasn't a real big deal for him to miss for an entire combat.

If it were a solo game, I'd be a little miffed that he cheated, but we had four other players in the group.  Their PCs were missing out on the action and being minimalized because of his cheating.

Possibly.  It might also be that a lot of the posters here simply don't cheat.

Either way, there does seem to be some bias.

A lot of the people here tend to play with characters who have a decent success rate. Even when the occasional bad roll occurs, the urge to cheat is tamer, because of the constant inflow of succesful actions.

My two cents, anyway.

It's also because cheating is like admitting that your skill isn't enough.

I think there are many people on the forum with the amount or kind of ego / self respect / insecurity to see cheating as losing.

Or just to see it in the same light as, say, playing a FPS in God-Mode.

Sure, you can do it, but what's the point?

Aid Another (hopefully) for a +2 ... of some sort ...  :o this smiley face is inappropriate.

I don't cheat, I don't need to.
DM-ing ; I often ditch the dice.
Die rolls indicate something happened or is happening.
Rolling ahead of time reduces the spontaneousness of the game.
So I make stuff up.

I never cheat intentionally when given clear guidelines about character creation, specific house rules, etc. I suppose I begin to cheat, or what others may call it, when the DM is very undecided about rules, books, and features and is reluctant to delve into a character's daily use.

If I have a responsible and dedicated DM, then I don't cheat. If I have a wishy-washy DM, then I'll probably cheat unintentionally because I haven't a clue to what is going on or have the care to manage such chaos.

I don't cheat. I've actually DM'ed games without fudging a single die roll, and every time is has been TPK. It made me realize just how often i save my Pcs, since dying is no fun for them. Cheating hasn't really come up, since everyone is pretty comfortable dying and stuff. The worst we get is always someone who gets brought in.

I think that this question is skewed on these boards because people, like someone above this post said, on this board, are made to avoid failure as much as possible. That and people are going to be reluctant to actually admit that they cheat to survive a D&D game.

That being said, I once watched someone rolls 4d6 drop the lowest for hours so he could actually claim he had 3 18's.
Witty sayings? Nah, not right now. Currently playing Dwarf Fortress and League of Legends. I really recommend League of Legends.

I started rolling everything without a DM screen in my last game.  I was fudging a bit in the PC's favor, and I wanted to stop.  It did add a more visceral feeling to the game.

+1

I actually stopped using a screen for a while due to space issues, there just wasn't room at the table really (we play in NYC), and I felt it was cutting me off from everyone else, which is also part of the reason I don't often set up my laptop at the table.  But, I did like the effect it had on the game.  I might be idiosyncratic, though, since as a player I prefer harder, more challenging games.  I like the dramatic tension created from the fact that we might actually lose.

RE: fudging dice: I rarely do it. I also rarely am able to give my PCs and adequate challenge because I love optimizing and it's fun and anyone who doesn't do it is a weak douchehole. But anyway, If my PCs die to stupidity that's fine, but if I overpower them I'll fudge. I usually overpower them about once per session (though I'm getting better at it).
