Fun with wands
« on: April 22, 2009, 04:42:36 PM »
I saw there is a mod to make a haft of a weapon hold a wand and use it still as a standard action, SO I was thinking this plus spell storing or channeling, plus hidous blow. So FIRE BALL, FLAME STRIKE, Eldritch Energy in the face. Would be fun maybe? So Cleric / Warlock / Eldritch (whatever does divine and channeling) or maybe just Warlock, make a Warlocks Mace that does this? Or Spell Sword. Any thoughts?

Duskblade 13 using a +1 spell storing, bloodstone weapon and using smiting spell feat.  Arcane Strike and knowledge devotion to add more ownage.

You're talking about Wand Chambers, and they don't change how the spell functions at all. They just make it so you don't have to waste a move action drawing the wand, and don't have to drop the wand afterwards to use your weapon. So a wand of fireball would still launch a normal fireball, not channel it into your attack. It would also still require a separate standard action to use, and hence couldn't be combined with an attack with the weapon.

Given the ruling on wands still using the same action as casting the spell normally does, I've found the best use of these things is to stick a wand of Wraithstrike or Nerveskitter into them.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.

I knew that about the still a standard action, open with fire ball, spell store flame strike, then hideous blow, open up with a bang, finish off one, and would cleave work with hideous blow? if so move onto next.

A Fireball from a wand is not worth the standard action it costs to use it in most situations where you could even afford a Wand of Fireball. :p

what about if your an artificer?, can you take the wand strike ( I think that is what it is called ) and double wand wielder? Fire to blasts with some double stabby stabby action. Just trying to think of something new and fun to try.

If you're an Artificer there are better things to make.

I have heard that "blastefisers" can do some crazy things with wands, but even with those it gets very expensive very fast.

Yes.

Scorching Ray, CL 7, was the optimum level by cost, if I remember.  Still costs like 1k gp per round.

Ya, Blastificers are like 10 charges per round for an Acid/Fire Scorching Ray which did 24d6 damage, twinned for another 24d6, split ray for another 24d6. But that requires Energy Substitution, Energy Admixture, Twin Spell, Split Ray. You could also Quicken another one for an extra blast, but that would be like 24 charges a round for an insane amount of damage.
Witty sayings? Nah, not right now. Currently playing Dwarf Fortress and League of Legends. I really recommend League of Legends.

Why would it require 10 charges in a round? Just use Metamagic Item. That spell should only take a single charge.

Still cool if you cast it directly into a spell storing weapon

Thats for people with organisational support giving them effectively unlimited ammo to blow away like that. It makes the blastificers who must craft their own cry.

And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? No. That only works with two specific staves (Power and Magi).

The wand chamber idea could work OK with a TWF Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster (or even a Rogue/Temple Raider of Olidimara)

Pick up TWF and Dual Wand wielder, then put cause light wounds (cheap - using with UMD) wands into your short sword hafts.

Then in combat you can choose (or switch between) your TWF or dual wand sneak attacking based on difficulty to hit...

Dunno how it would work out - but I've often thought a dual wand weilding roguish build would be interesting...
If at first you don't succeed - maybe failure is your style.

If you're going into wand wielding, there is the Rod of Many wands. Sure, it lengthens activation to a full round action and consumes three charges from each of the three wands inside, but activating three wands at once is potentially very useful. Though in all honesty, a double weilding wizard with a raven familiar can duplicate the same effect for much cheaper.

there's also the psionic djorle wielding feats, which I'm sure would cross over for wand wielding.
