crafting loop

items cost 1/3 of their price in materials, right?
this has been used in the "use one warforged to craft three warforged" trick.

well, how much do the materials to craft the materials cost? how about that materials materials?  with enough time (flowing time traits and/or fabricate, im looking at you!) could you conceivably craft ANY item for the price of a rock you find on the ground?

sure, magic items would still cost xp, but paying 1/infinity times the gold price of an item is a hell of a lot better than paying 1/2 times the price.

With enough time, you can generate arbitrarily large amounts of money with the profession/perform/sleight of hand skill.

It's still not worth it.

what about an artificer who wants to craft an expensive item at a relatively low level? like, say, a flask of endless water at level 7?

This isn't news, the only thing stopping you is a DM/Lifespan/Time.

Uh... how about you can't CRAFT materials beyond a certain point? You've got to mine them or cut down dem trees.

Fabricate + eschew material components.

Thats tricky, though, b/c eschew only gets rid of components > 1gp, and crafting requires 1/3 of the cost of the item in materials...

Still, chain fabricate stuff (make a 3 gp item, then a 9 gp item out of that, then a 27 out of that, etc...).

Kinda like someone finding the rock and crafting it to smelt iron ore from it, then crafting the ore to refine it, then crafting the refined metal into parts, then crafting the parts into a multi-million dollar fighter jet?

Nope, can't think of any examples of that happening in real life. ;)

*headdesk*

But yeah, it depends on a lot of factors, including among others size, methods of construction, use of composite materials etc. :)

So, if I had a prisoner that was forced to break rocks into other rocks, and told him to use the craft rules, would his labor result in three other rocks the same size ?

Guess we've got a small mountain going there.
A mountain we get by siccing a crew of laborers to break orc blocks into chunks with the Craft skill.

I'm using this next time I have a character in prison.

DM: "You have to do hard time while here. They give you a hammer."
Me: "Okay, I make a craft (rocks) check. Give it a couple weeks, I'll have the quarry overflowing with rocks, no one will be able to stop me walking away."
DM: "Wait...what? No! What? DAMNIT!"

Behind door number one: INSTANT DEATH!
Behind door number 2: A magic crown!
Behind door number 3: 4d6 giant bees, and THREE HUNDRED POUNDS OF HONEY!
They don't/haven't, was the point. 3.5 is as dead as people not liking nice tits.

Sometimes, their tits (3.5) get enhancements (houserules), but that doesn't mean people don't like nice tits.

Though sometimes, the surgeon (DM) botches them pretty bad...
Best metaphor I have seen in a long time.  I give you much fu.

Seven for the Barbarian-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Monks doomed to die,
One for the Wizard on his dark throne

So, theoretically, one could use this skill on an atom and produce three atoms?

Dear god, we're creating matter (without magic, no less)...Physics, please bend over.

HAH!

The atoms would need to have a half-life >6 seconds, so there is that...

I'm certain some radioactive isotopes have extremely long half-lives. Perhaps this is how third-world countries stockpile nuclear weapons without us catching on...

That's why you take ranks in Craft (The Planes).
