Healing yourself as an undead
« on: April 19, 2009, 07:17:33 PM »
So, I have wizard who might be joining the game as a lich. Of course, the party clerics would be useless. They have little reason to prepare inflict spells when there is only one undead in a group of six. It will be largely up to me to heal myself , and since I don't get back hit points regularly at night it will have to be through magic.

So far, my base idea is Energy Substitution [Cold] + Lord of the Uttercold. Gaining half damage back on damaging spells is a good way to do this, but then I'm also not a blasting wizard so losing a few prepared slots to cold/negative spells and two feats seems less than optimal

I thought about getting around this by just not banning necromancy as a school, but then necromancy has so few spells that actually do negative damage anyway (which is peculiar from popular belief) and because the next school to give up would be abjuration; which just isn't happening.

What other ways are there to heal yourself with negative energy?

Play a dread necromancer (Heroes of Horror, at-will negative energy touch) or a sorcerer with the white dragonspawn template (Dragonlance, grants immunity to cold and advances sorcerer casting)
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
black sand in da pants.

thats right, poor that sand into your underwear. fill your boots with it.

hell, if you swallowed it, it would stay in contact with you forever. undead don't poop, now do they?

fast healing 1d6 should cover most of your needs. failing that, chuck some wands of inflict towards the cleric.

Just touch yourself.  :smirk

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.

If only this character were female, we'd finally have optimized having sand in one's vagina.

I approve this thread.

Plus fucking one.

On-topic.... there are some wizard spells that could help with that, I guess...

Make sure whatever trick you use is approved by your DM before you start.  I had a DM that argued rather vehematly that negative energy descriptor effects do not explicitly heal undead unless it actually says they do (as inflict spells do).

I can see where that ruling would come from, given the wording on the subtype (negative energy spells can heal undead, but they don't have to). It's a matter of interpretation, I suppose...

The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

Someone has to start a thread of "rules of D&D" with that as #34 :p

Necrosis Carnexes (MMIV, IIRC?) are another nice undead healing method.

lesser vigor heals undeads too, it grants fast healing, it does not channel positive energy.

Get some wands of lesser vigor and hand them to the cleric for some healing.

Well, filling my breeches with black sand and touching myself at night are great ways to heal myself outside of combat, so that is covered. Though, the excerpt on the lich's touch attack specifically applies it's negative damage to living creatures, a nit-picking DM might argue with that.

The next problem would be healing myself in combat if I really need to. Short of a cleric casting harm on me, I have few ways to heal large amounts in short term bursts.
