Shopping for a Dragonfire Adept
« on: March 02, 2009, 04:56:39 PM »
So I'll be playing a Dragonfire Adept in Sinfire Titan's PbP campaign soon, and he has asked us to compose a list of the gear we would like to have by level 20 so he can take that into account when distributing treasure.

Pretty much all D&D 3.5 material is open.
We are currently level 3,
sheet is here: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheets/view.php?id=107921

Basic idea is BC with some back-up damage, going for strafing runs with the breath weapon later, but due to the nature of PbP's that will likely take a while.
I'll attempt to add some more versatility via UMD, like a standard Rogue/Warlock/DFA :)

Build stub:
Quote
Dragonborn Hobgoblin Dragonfire Adept 20
Flaws: Murky-Eyed, Noncombatant
Feats:
1) -Entangling Exhalation;
-Power Surge (Dragon Mag, basically allows me to add +1 damage per die or increase the DC of my Breath Weapon by 1. In return I have to wait one round to use it. This reset time set in a fixed number or rounds qualifies me for Metabreath Feats later on.);
-Clinging Breath

3) - Lingering Breath
6) - Flyby Attack
9) - Flyby Breath (Dragonlance, use Breath Weapon as free action during flight, but still only 1/round)
12) - Strafing Breath (Dragonlance, cover larger are with strafing attack during flight)
15) - Ability Focus (Breath Weapon)
18) - Heighten Breath

As a side note, the adventure has been described as having a heavy undead, aberration, and outsider presence.

The stuff I've come up with so far is listed in this post: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=3744.msg118830#msg118830

I'm not the greatest when it comes to equipment, but you look pretty set. Get your Con as high as physically possible.

Don't you have 2 invocations at 3rd? And Ability Focus(Breath Weapon) is always a nice feat.

Draconic Grafts from Races of the Dragon can be useful and save you some feats and/or invocations.  Like Blindsense for only 10,000 GP?  Yes, please!
Are you worthy of Ascension?

Who else is going to be in the party?  If you can cadge a Superior Resistance from someone, that'd negate the need for a resistance item in the long run.

Also: how does the DM handle UMD/staves?

The other guys are a Factotum and a Barbarian/Totemist, so no primary casters.

What do you mean with your UMD question? Using UMD to determine the CL of a Staff?
I think SiFir will just use the RAW...

Add some spikes to that armour and you have room for another weapon crystal. Don't forget to make use of your second gauntlet either. I would also replace the buckler with a dwarf buckler-axe for another slot.

That should leave your main weapon free for a weapon crystal which is actually good. :P
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
[spoiler]Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.

This is giving me the idea to do a mini-handbook for equipment for several roles in the party...  I guess this would be the arcane (w/ UMD) setup.

I'm not very good at equipment suggestions, but writing something like this would make it better, for sure.

Belt of Battle (paired with other Belt Items, most notably Dragon Spirit Cincture, see MIC for stacking magic items)
Various Scrolls, Wands, Eternal Wands, Staffs, Scepters, Schemas and other UMD-able Items
-Metabreath spells
-Healing and restoration spells
-No-save BC spells
Various Alchemical Items

The bolded ones are the ones I need to investigate. Source for them?

Also, be careful with the belt slot customization. Losing that belt hurts you a great deal (and I am known for using Suppress Magic+Chain Spell on melee characters more than I'm known for robbing you guys of your loot).

Several useful spells:

Hide From Dragons (Bashea is the one in control of the Dragonspawn after all)
Carbwalk (for the Totemist and Factotum)
Improvisation (for you especially)
Rage (for the Totemist again)
Haste (duh)
G'elsewhere Chant (emergency use)
Ray of Dizzyness
Mass Resurgence
Dark Way (never know when it will come in handy)
Lesser Vigor (several of these may be needed)
Mass Aid
Holy Storm
Mass Resist Energy
Ring of Blades
Mass Lesser Vigor
Summon Monster 3
Wall of Ice/Good
Revivify
Wall of Smoke
Blood Frenzy (for the Totemist)
Briar Web
Mass Snake's Swiftness
Charge of the Triceratops
Girallon's Blessin (should be obvious why)
Jagged Tooth
Nature's Balance (transer your Str score to someone else)
Eye of the Hurricane (great for regrouping)
Vortex of Teeth

Those are from the SC, and are all on the Druid, Bard, Cleric, Assassin, and Paladin lists.

Thanks for the tips.
I'll get a list of spells for UMD-ing up somewhere this weekend :)

About the belt thing, I'm not a melee type ;)
But seriously though, I'll definitely take it into account, it won't be my only trick.
The Belt of Battle is mostly there so I can cover more distance once I get flight.

As for sources...
The Deathwand enhancement should be in the A&EG, while Tempo Bloodspikes are in MoE IIRC.

I'll take a look at them when I get my flash drive with the PDFs in it back (left it at the family shop).

To summarize,
Deathwand allows you to store 2 wands in your crossbow and use them (kinda like a double-magic-wand chamber, so a total of 3 wands in my crossbow without a need to draw them if I combine it with a wand chamber).

Tempo Bloodspikes (IIRC) grant you the use of an extra move action during one round somewhere in the next hour (they're single use items).

Don't forget a wandchamber in your crossbow's bayonet (Complete Scoundrel)!  :smirk

Forget it. There's not enough space in the bayonet to hold it (it needs to be a hafted weapon, or at least have a place for you to put your hands).

A wand bracer, on the other than, holds 5 wands at once, and allows you to draw them as a Swift action. Two of those hold 10 wands. Also, a Rod of Many Wands may also help.

however, a wand bracer requires you to drop the wand to ready the next.....  this can lead to alot of problems, especially if you are a flyer....

personally, I wouldn't want to use a wand bracer, unless you also tie all the wands to your armor with string.
I do not suffer from paranoia; I enjoy every second of it.

Or turn copper pieces into a key chain attached to each wand.

actually, if we combined that with quick draw...... eat your heart out, wand bracer!  :D
