Q299: Can someone link me to an explanation about UMD and how it is used to get CLs of 100+ with staffs..  I am starting an artificer this weekend and need to get a much better understanding of the skill and its uses as they pertain to an artificer.  The only thing i found was in the wizards archive and was giving me a headache to read it without the formatting.

It's relatively simple, really. You use UMD to emulate a certain caster level. When you use the wand/staff, you substitute this emulated caster level for the item's own (I'm not sure how this is accomplished, exactly; I assume it's either a feat or a class feature). Best of use on spells that don't have a CL cap, or for Consumptive Field shenanigans.

I believe the current ruling is that you can't do that.  UMD doesn't let you use class features, just emulate them, and you're USING your CL on the staff.

Would you be so kind as provide a link? Not that I doubt you, I just wanna make sure.

Ack, I can't remember where.  I think it was FAQ, but I'm not certain.  Anyway, it's a fairly obvious outgrowth of "This skill does not let you actually use the class feature of another class", "wielder can use

Q301

Are there any officially printed weapons that take advantage of an above average strength score?

Q302

Are there any weapons of comparable strength with the spiked chain that offer it's reach and adjacent threat?

301: I believe that some require an above average strength score (the Ritiik from Frostburn comes to mind), but I'm not sure.

Q306 - I have a friend joining a game soon, she will probably be picking a class from ToB but hasn't ever used those classes before. I'm a little familiar with them, she wants to make a mobile skirmish-y type fighter so I thought Swordsage is probably best, but should I suggest Warblade for the recovery mechanic and White Raven Tactics instead?

Adaptive style makes Swordsage much more viable I guess? Does that recover your spent techniques in a full round and let you pick new ones if you want to or am I reading it wrong?

A306: a) that is entirely a judgement call, and they both have their advantages.  I'm slightly in favor of the Swordsage for mobility, though.
b) Yes, its like a must-have for Swordsages.

The warblade recovery mechanic sucks, but they DO get access to Iron Heart. If you're gunning for mobility though, Swordsage is strictly better thanks to Desert Wind and Shadow Hand.
