truely rediculous: proper otimization of a monk/kensei
« on: February 07, 2009, 11:33:31 AM »
the VoP monk/kensei is a very thematic build, but you encounter some problems.

sure, those using natural weapons are the only VoP characters that can truely use kensei, as it requires a mwk or natural weapon.
however, upon reading the rules for imbuing.... you can only pick ONE natural attack,  and you must imbue ALL limbs of that type.  the example used in the description is a Kensei who wants to imbue his fists.

this is truely irritating, because the monk unarmed strike description says you can use ANY limb....

meaning, that in order to play a VoP monk/kensei without paying 120% of the xp instead of 110%, you either have to use headbutting.... or the one other "unique" limb that you have... truly being able to strike with "ANY part of your body" and all that.  and often, this tactic is combined with abberant reach, resulting in a character either running around using flurry of 10' reach headbutts, or something more disturbing.

normally, this sort of thing is just a gag for a monk character.  but, since we have VoP anyways.... why wear pants?
town mayor: "Why is that holy man running around naked???"
party face: "he took his vow of poverty to the extreme, and refuses to own even clothes."
party arcanist: "now, hope you fail your knowledge(arcana) check, cause you don't wanna realize that hes unable to cast gutsnake...."

No, an unarmed strike is considered to be a single weapon, regardless of which body part used to activate it. I think of it as a floating bubble around you, and when you punch or kick through it, the enchantments are wrapped around your strike and get slammed into the enemy.

Also, the VoP Monk/Kensai sucks. It's not good at all. You're better off with Leadership to hire an Artificer cohort to craft all your stuff.

true on most counts bandman..... but,

kensei specifically states you must say which body part you are enchanting. it also states you MUST enchant ALL of that limb type.  the example used is a human, who must enchant BOTH fists.  so, in order to save xp costs.... you have to pick a single limb to enchant.  thats the way kensei works.  sadly, humans only have 1-2 unique limbs... head and optional part.  i guess you could, by raw, state that you are enchanting your bellybutton.... but seems even more farfetched than what I have said.

personally, I would only use these arguments in an actual game if i wanted to convice the DM to only charge me 110% of xp to enchant all my unarmed strikes.... but by RAW, things are silly.

There has got to be better weapon enchantments though.... we have +10 to play with. dancing?   :D

EDIT: should we take versatile unarmed strike, so we can do our choice of bludgeoning, piercing or slashing?

Take only one kensai level, use gp enhancements.
120% is awesome, because you got a 80% discount.

this is truely irritating, because the monk unarmed strike description says you can use ANY limb....

Excellent! Also lets work on a Uranium Sword next, because like yours this is a truely orginal idea.

Also monks can't use "any" part, infact they can't even use their head as natural weapons at all. The monk descirption is pretty specific about what you can use but most people are rather lenient- and why not? Unless you're making inane builds for some reason...

So this is a RAI attempt?

VoP Monk/Kensei sucks away.

A little more optimal and probably better word-play would be:

I'm at a loss as to how this works, and cannot find a post in that link that explains it.

How did you get an 80% discount? How did you use gp enhancements with VoP?

The discount comes from the text on a double-weapon.

Not sure how to do it with VoP though (which, incidentally, imo, is the easiest vow in that book to roleplay).

I did exactly that in a party of casters. I played a monk that ran around naked and beat (un-optimized) NPC casters into submission with his dick :twitch.

This was after the DM called me a min-maxer and said I couldn't RP. After 1 session he was begging me to tone down the RP (the other players loved it though)  :lmao
