BIG help with spell selection needed.
« on: February 03, 2009, 01:50:12 PM »
Okay, here's the thing. I'm playing an Unseen Seer Conjurer (banned Necromancy and Enchantment) in a campaign where we are, essentially, trapped in the Underdark. Currently 11th level, bordering on 12th (casting like a 10th-level Wizard. Stupid GM wouldn't let me dip into Ruathar...). Thing is, while I know plenty of those spells that are just plain awesome, like Evard's Black Tentacles, there's no way in hell I can keep track of all the awesome spells out there. I've picked up Hunter's Eye as my first advanced learning spell, but I didn't decide on the second just yet.

The big problem: the DM blanket-banned the Spell Compendium. Nothing in it is acceptable. (And yes, that means I get to use the more ridiculous versions of several spells. He knows not what he does!)

So, I need a list of the best available spells from anything that's not SpC, environment-based and Races of (which is why he wouldn't let me dip into Ruathar). Yummy divination spells are first on my "to-look" list; good Conjuration spells are second.

I will, obviously, be conducting my own research into this in parallel, but there are just too many books to look into. Thanks for the help.

I know. DM limited us to a single PrC EVER too, so that means I'm screwed as far as acquiring divine spells go.

Here are some nice ones from core, up to level 7.

Divination:

Identify
Detect Thoughts
Scrying
Telepathic Bond
Analyze Dweomer
True Seeing
Greater Arcane Sight
Greater Scrying

Conjuration: *

Grease
Summon Monster ___
Glitterdust
Web
Stinking Cloud
Sleet Storm
Evard's Black Tenticles
Dimension Door
Solid Fog
Minor Creation (for making lots of poison)
Cloudkill
Teleport
Wall of Stone
Lesser Planar Binding
Acid Fog
Planar Binding
Wall of Iron
Plane Shift
Teleport Greater

* Note that a lot of these can be even more aweseome with Extend Spell and/or Sculpt Spell.  Also, sculpting is nice when you're in close quarters, or if you want an increased AoE for many spells.  You might want a metamagic rod of each feat.

Are you getting persist?  if so, grab the non SpC version of Bladeweave, and stack Poison Spell and Persist on it.  Anytime you hit anyone with a melee attack, you get a free touch attack to Daze AND Poison.  Actually this probably is a bad idea for a character with your LOW HP, but i couldn't help but want to mention it.

Why ban necromacy?  A sneak attacking caster can ill afford to lose Wracking Touch and Vampiric Touch.  Oh, well.

Guidance of the Avatar and Improvisation both make you a pimpin' skill monkey, not bad ideas for advance learning.

Grab the web version of Splinterbolt for an attack spell.  It's pretty nifty.

Is "Find the Gap" available outside the SpC?  What about Cloud of Knives?  CoK is invaluable for an arcane SA build.

Already grabbed CoK. One of my favorite spells in conjunction with Hunter's Eye. Wish I could persist that bugger already...

Three reasons: one, didn't fit well with the character. Two, DM is overly fond of critters immune to Necromancy effects (I can at least circumvent SA immunity by grabbing Gravestrike). Three, I like the battlefield control aspect better than the debuff one.

Quite so, quite so. Specially since with all the skillmonkeying around I needed to get into Unseen Seer I actually skimped out a little on Knowledges.

I do have persist, but I don't know where Bladeweave and Poison Spell are from. (I got Residual Metamagic, too).

Poison spell is DotU, and bladeweave is form one of the completes.  Av or Ar, i think.  It's not the best idea for someone with d4 hitdie.

A SA Arcanist doesn't use Necro to debuff, he uses it to HEAL himself.  It's been ruled that SA-ing with VT does give you more bonus hitpoints... go to town.  And Wracking Touch is auto-adds your SA die... no need to make them lose Dex-to-AC first.  Both are touch though.

Damn, I doubt my GM will go for DotU stuff.

Sadly, I then stumble into the "my GM likes undead" thing...

The funny thing is, except for the stuff that's level 6 and above (and a couple of notables such as lesser planar binding), I've already got all of those.  :P

Well, long-term, get shades, then use it to mimic lesser dragon ally, for a free army of 80% real dragons that owe their very existence to you.

SPC changed it from being cojuration(summoning), but without that...

Less a spell selection recommendation than general advice: Are Sandstorm and Frostburn allowed? With Spell Compendium banned, there's nothing keeping you from paying a Druid to cast Mantle of the Fiery Soul and Mantle of the Icy Soul on you to give you both the [Fire] and [Cold] subtypes.
It's all about vision and making reality conform to your vision. By dropping a fucking house on it.

Superior Darkvision might be useful. It was from Savage Species and Masters of the Wild, but I don't know if it was reprinted in a later book. It was level 4, and let you see in the dark as well as you could in full daylight, basically.
