Running Win95/98 games on Vista Home 64bit
« on: January 23, 2009, 08:01:19 AM »
Well, I'm craving for Heavy Gear 1 and Mechwarrior 2: Mercs, but they don't run on Vista Home 64.
Microsoft's Virtua PC doesn't support Vista 64bit.
VMWare's download stops at 50% and can't be restarted.

So, which options are left to me to get these games to run again on my system? Due to my limited space, a second PC isn't an option.

Thanks in advance!

Ditch Vista and get a real OS (or go back to XP, whichever is easier)?   :flirt

You could also try and use Something like Virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org/).  Similar to VMWare, but may work better for you?  I wouldn't be surprised if the 64 bit OS's have broken some old games.  May just be something you'll have to live with :-\

That isn't an option, since the game doesn't run on DOS.
Neither is reinstalling XP.

Maybe dual-booting your computer with another OS would work.  Honestly, if you go to your average public high school you could probably find a Win98 installer disc in their tech department.

Trouble is, you have to install the older OS first. I don't want to play the game so badly that I'd go through a format and all it entails. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
