My stance is still that it is unclear and can be argued both ways, but I do see your reading Phaedrus (hence my point that it can go both ways).

The way the language is worded can be read two different ways

A) A size modifier (one point) or a special size modifier for an opposed check (second point)
B) a size modifier for an opposed check (one point) or a special size modifier for an opposed check (second point).

That's the wonder of the English language right there. It could be read either way, so to each their own. ;)
The cake is a lie.

Slight Build: The physical stature of kobolds lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category smaller. Whenever a kobold is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check[/b] (such as Hide), the kobold is treated as one size smaller if doing so is advantageous to the character.
Bold and underline are mine. Like I said, you can argue it both ways, but you are subjected to a size modifier for your AC, so you could make the case. ;)
AC/attack rolls are not an opposed[/b] check. It wouldn't be limited to skills only (for example, defending against a trip is an opposed check, but it wouldn't be advantageous, so the kobold wouldn't use the ability), but it also wouldn't apply to AC. I think it is worded very clearly, and there is little room for intelligent debate at all.
I think you're right in that there's little room for debate...but that you're not reading it correctly - it says a size modifier or a special size modifer for an opposed check.. AC comes from the first section (a size modifier), escape artist and hide bonuses come from the second secton (a special size modifer for an opposed check.).
But, that's the way I read it - your mileage may vary.
You're reading a genuine, 100% natural Wih post - they say they're as rare as hen's teeth from a Chicken Infestee's pocket. Oooh, aaah! </unlurk>

The optimizer in me want to agree with AC, but the DM in me wants to agree with Phaedrus...

I have to say I agree with Phaedrus on this one, and i'm playing a kobold for my next game! They really should have worded powerful build and slight build better tho.
