My stance is still that it is unclear and can be argued both ways, but I do see your reading Phaedrus (hence my point that it can go both ways).
The way the language is worded can be read two different ways
A) A size modifier (one point) or a special size modifier for an opposed check (second point)
B) a size modifier for an opposed check (one point) or a special size modifier for an opposed check (second point).
That's the wonder of the English language right there. It could be read either way, so to each their own.
