j0lt's Dawn of Defiance game logs
« on: August 18, 2008, 05:02:20 AM »
I just started running a Star Wars Saga Edition game with a new group this weekend.  We had our first session, in which I ran the players through a quickie homebrew "prequel" to get them accustomed to the new ruleset, as well as to get to know their play styles, etc...

Cast:
Vaan (Soldier 1) - A young Alderaanian freighter pilot.  Inherited an old junker (Dynamic-Class) from his father, who disappeared many years ago.
Bowie (Scoundrel 1) - A force-sensitive Corellian from Nar Shaddaa on the run from a Hutt gangster.  A few years before the beginning of the Clone Wars he was contacted on Nar Shaddaa by Jedi Master Denia (we'll see her later), who was searching for potential students for the Jedi Academy, but he was already too old to begin training.
Koth Rayl'skar (Scoundrel 1/GMPC) - Vaan's Bothan co-pilot and tech specialist.  Mostly keeps the ship from falling apart and upgrades the PCs' gear.

Session 1: Enter the Heroes
I decided to start the campaign with individual backstory, and had the players decide why their characters were both at the Burning Deck cantina in the Corellian Sector on Nar Shaddaa.

Bowie had been working odd jobs for a couple of low-tier gangsters; Sarli the Hutt, and a yet un-named Bothan.  The Bothan had Bowie hijack a shipment, which turned out to be a fairly nice credit transfer (10k).  Sarli doesn't know who did it, but suspects Bowie and a few others.  Bowie needs to get off planet quickly and quietly, so he heads down to the Burning Deck in search of non-public transport.

Vaan and Koth were on a stopover looking for shipping work, so Vaan approached the bartender and asked if there was any work available.  The bartender had nothing for him, but said he'd let them know if anything came up while they were still there, so Vaan ordered a couple drinks and sat down in a corner booth with a good view of the doorway.

Bowie is referred to Vaan and Koth by the bartender and buys a round of drinks to help start his negotiation.  Eventually Bowie barters Vaan down to 8000 credits for transportation to a small space station orbiting the core world of Brentaal.  Aside from some mutual distrust, the party gets underway.

Koth gets the latest astrogation data from a shady dealer (who the PCs don't know works for Sarli), and they leave the spaceport without any problems and make the jump into hyperspace, however the astrogation data has been tampered with.  Sarli's new racket seems to be out-of-system piracy.  The tampered data plots a route through the planet Circarpous V (AKA Mimban).

When the navicomputer detects the mass shadow, the failsafes suddenly drop the ship from hyperspace, killing the hyperdrive.  Lying in wait are a few of Sarli's Corsairs, piloting a pair of Z-95 Headhunters and a Cloakshape Fighter.  Opting for escape, Vaan steers the ship down into the atmosphere and lays in a collision course for the jungle floor, pulling off a beautiful slip to bring the ship in for a rough, but safe landing just under the jungle canopy.  Due to Vaan's expert maneuver, the pursuing craft are unable to pinpoint the exact location of the ship.

While Koth works on the hyperdrive, Vaan and Bowie decide to explore the surroundings and make sure the jungle canopy is adequately covering the ship from sight.  While trudging through the bog, they hear the sound of a tree crashing down and a high-pitched scream from off in the jungle.  Hesitantly, they investigate, and discover a Wandrella has trapped a young Mimbanite against a cliff.  I used D&D's Purple Worm mini for the Wandrella and created my own stats for it.  I'll post them up later.

Vaan fires at the Wandrella, drawing its attention away from the Mimbanite while Bowie attempts to sneak around the other side to get her away from the beast.  The Wandrella begins to close on Vaan, so Bowie takes a shot to draw it away, but his plan works too well and he almost becomes lunch.  Eventually the two heroes are able to drive the beast away with their painful blaster fire.

Being unable to communicate in Basic, the Mimbanite beckons the PCs to follow her.  She takes them past a small Imperial mining camp, and deeper into the swamp to a hidden Mimbanite village.  The village elder presents the PCs with a stone pendant (thaissen crystal) for rescuing her daughter.  Upon placing the pendant around Bowie's neck, the crystal begins glowing a faint blue.

Before they can find out more, Vaan's comlink crackles between static and Koth's urgent voice saying that the corsairs had found the ship and were attacking.  The PCs quickly sign that they have to leave, and are escorted to the edge of the mining camp where they spot a few speeders.  I had expected them to simply steal one, and had planned out a chase sequence using the rules from Hot Pursuit, but instead they walked into the Pick and Tankard miner's bar and bartered with the miners to rent one.

One of the miners pilots the PCs out towards their ship, which is being bombarded with blaster cannon fire from the Cloakshape Fighter.  The two Z-95s are nowhere to be seen.  When the PCs reach the clearing, they spot Koth standing on the ramp exchanging fire with two men who are slowly advancing from the two Z-95s.  Again, the PCs opt for escape and after blasting one of the pirates, they rush onto the ship and take off.  Using the same astrogation data, they manage to jump into hyperspace before too much more damage is done to the ship.

We stopped there, next we'll begin Episode 1 of Dawn of Defiance.

I'm reading through the later episodes in an effort to tie the characters more directly in to the story.  I haven't found much for Vaan yet, aside from his being from Alderaan, but I'll come up with something.

Also, in between episodes 3 and 4, as well as 7 and 8, I'll be adding in a couple home brew adventures, including a surprise crossover!

edit: No game this week, both players are busy with family stuff, but that gives me more time to adapt the first part of the campaign to the party.

Yes, I'm expecting a good couple hours of gaming this Sunday, so I ought to have more stuff for y'all to read.

I WAS expecting a good couple hours of gaming on Sunday, but Vaan's player couldn't make it, so it's been postponed another week.  :(
On the plus side, I got to hang out and play Guitar Hero 3 with my friend, followed by learning to play Settlers of Catan while drinking whiskey & cokes until the wee hours of the morning.   :D

Tonight's game session ended up at my apartment due to the gaming store being completely overrun by Yu-gi-oh players and their silly card games.  As a result, we gamed over rum&cokes with bits of cheese.   :D

Continuing from last time, the PCs had a clever plan to throw whoever was following them off the scent; they launched an escape pod and when they arrived at Sel Zonn station Bowie played a little hide-and-seek while the customs officer checked the ship out (for those of you with Starships of the Galaxy, the PCs are using a Dynamic-class Freighter; the deckplans are on page 81).

Bowie was hiding in the storage compartment off the main hold.  Vaan was escorting the customs officer through to show the escape pod that his passenger "stole".  The customs officer checked the cargo bay next, followed by the engine room.  As they checked out the engine room, Bowie moved towards the port dormitory (which had already been checked).  He rolled a 17 on his stealth check, but the customs officer got an 18 on his perception.  He asked who else was on the ship, and Van responded that his co-pilot Koth was still on the bridge.  To cover for Bowie, Koth suddenly walked down towards the engine room assuading the customs officer's suspicions.

They decided that Bowie would stay on the ship, but they'd keep their comlinks "broadcasting" so he'd be able to hear everything they did.  Vaan sent Koth off to purchase a replacement escape pod (4000 credit diversion!) while he went in search of a place to buy some supplies.  While they did this, Bowie reached out tentatively with the Force to see if he could detect the presence of any other force-sensitives in the station.  Aside from broadcasting his location to any force-sensitive in the area, he accomplished nothing, but was happy that he could test out his Force powers.

Vaan stopped by Mechanical Allies and tried to barter with the seedy Twi'lek for one of his astromech droids.  He completely ignored the R5 unit (which the Twi'lek advertised as having a brand new motivator).  Going into the back room to test out the accessories on the used R2 unit, the Twi'lek tried to impress Vaan by showing how he had replaced the R2's fire extinguisher with a flame-thrower.  Vaan didn't end up buying it as he botched his price negotiations.

Vaan then proceeded to buy a new flight suit (Combat Jumpsuit) and was on his way back to the ship when I sprung the first encounter of Dawn of Defiance.  Hearing blaster fire over the comlink, Bowie FINALLY left the ship to go see if he could help, but Vaan ended up taking out one of the Imperial informants and the trooper before the other informant ran away.

...After bringing Maya back to the ship, the PCs ventured down into Deep Storage Bay V14.  They managed to get past the pair of Gammoreans guarding the door without bloodshed, and were dealing with Switch when Ganga Lor burst in.  The combat was short and sweet with the heroes taking Ganga Lor and his thugs out in short order.  After some more negotiations, the PCs got the information they needed to pick up Maya's "shipment" in the main docking bay of Blue Deck.  En route to Blue Deck, they got themselves a pair of mechanics coveralls each in case they needed a disguise.

Since both PCs were human, they had no troubles on the upper-class Blue Deck, but they were a little surprised at the pristine conditions.  So surprised that they didn't notice the Imperial informant watching them.

Entering the docking bay, they encountered a small group of Stormtroopers and an Imperial officer unloading the very cargo they were after.  A clever Bowie managed to convince the Imps that it was his job to operate the lift and made a big show of it (granting a +5 to his Deception roll, which ended up as a 28), to the point where the Imps were more bewildered than anything.  Unfortunately, his piloting was less than perfect and they called his bluff.

After a brief firefight in which Vaan pulled off a Han Solo-esque charge, blasting a trooper point-blank in the helmet, Koth brought the ship around and picked up the PCs and cargo before flying away as quickly as possible before the turbolasers came online.

The session ended there, and will continue again on the 28th.

Yeah, they're just starting to get the feel of the group dynamic.  Up next, they're heading to Alderaan (Vaan's home planet) and we'll see what kind of trouble they can get to once they meet up with a certain high-ranking Alderaanian official whose name rhymes with "Fail Morgana".  :p

Surprise session last night, giving me a total of 10 minutes + 30 on the train to prepare!   :study

I printed out the next segment while still at work, had no time to go home for my dice, books, character sheets, or anything.  I skimmed over the adventure notes during the train ride over to one of the players' homes as best I could and off we went.

Last time, we left off with the PCs en route to Alderaan with Maya and Carbonite Guy (for lack of a better name) safely tucked in the ship.  Vaan was concerned about the ship's transponder codes, and having them recorded by the port authority when they landed, but Maya told him not to worry and that she would take care of everything.  The ever suspicious Bowie was trying everything including the force to figure out if she was hiding something, but she didn't give off any kind of vibe so he eventually gave up.

Upon arrival in the Alderaan system, Maya sends a code signal to the port authority, which grants them access to the senator's palace landing platform, no questions asked.  They are met by the Senator's majordomo and a crew of medical technicians who quickly take Maya and the guy in Carbonite to the medical facilities.  Vaan accompanies the majordomo to the grand hall while Bowie goes with his escort out of the palace to buy some nicer clothes (in an effort to be more presentable in front of the Senator).  Finally, they meet Senator Organa, and he tells them quite openly about his views of the empire, and asks their help.  Taken aback by his candid treasonous words, the PCs don't know how to react, but eventually agree to help him.  The Senator explains that one of his informants was a high-ranking Imperial Navy officer named Admiral Varth.  He had recently dropped out of contact, and Bail wants the PCs to rescue him.  He had all the logistical information worked out.  Thanks to his network of agents, he was able to pinpoint the location where Varth was being held.

After requisitioning some extra equipment, the PCs took off and headed out towards the planet Felucia.
(...more to come, gotta head to work...)

(...same session, continued)

The PCs had been given an approximate landing area far enough away from the facility and its orbiting Imperial Class Star Destroyer (first the PCs have seen).  Once underway, they made decent time with several good untrained Survival checks.  While traveling, they also noticed the odd white helmet or bit of armour stuck up in a tree, or on a mushroom.  They recognized the armour as being similar to Stormtrooper armour, but a little different (I was trying to set up the next encounter as a potential non-combat encounter).  Vaan decided to shoot one of the helmets out of the tree to recover the comlink and see if he could listen in on any transmissions, but when he activated the comlink he was greeted only with static.

The PCs came to a large bog, and stood about debating whether or not to go around.  One of the PCs spotted some movement out of the corner of his eye just behind one of the small islands.  He threw a glowstick over to the island, revealing a strange leafy creature (Felucian).  The creature stood up and stared at the PCs for a moment before walking off into the bog.  The PCs decided to followed him (heh), and when two of them were on the small island, the other three Felucians rose up out of the muck and surrounded them.  The other Felucian turned around and began to approach the group.

Seeing a weapon, Vaan opened fire, and they ended up killing all four Felucian scouts, including one that was trying to escape!  When the battle was over, they heard something splashing through the water towards them.  Vaan knew that this planet was the home planet of the fearsome Rancor, and so he was a little on edge, but when the figure approached, they realized it was a human.

It was a very old man, who had apparently been there since the Clone Wars.  He introduced himself as Vazus Mandrake.  He said he would explain more, but with the PCs blasting everything in sight, it was a wonder all the Rancors didn't know they were there.  He escorted the PCs back to a hidden Felucian village carved out of the very mushrooms of the fungal swamp.

The Felucians of the village watched the PCs curiously from a distance as Mandrake further explained the background of his situation and why he was there.  As an elderly Felucian passed by, Bowie heard a strange guttural whispering in his head.  Curious, he passed one of his Thaissen crystals to Vaan, who surreptitiously passed by the old Felucian and noted the faint glow denoting the presence of the Force.

While walking back to report his findings to Bowie, Vaan heard what sounded like cries of pain from one of the mushroom huts.  He motioned Bowie and Koth over to check it out, and inside they discovered what looked like a makeshift hospital.  Inside lay four young Felucians, their skin a pale gray.  Mandrake explained that they had been out near the "vanishing place", what the Felucians were calling the Imperial prison facility.  They had tried everything to try and cure the youngsters, but nothing was working.  The PCs mentioned that they had a medical droid on the ship and volunteered to go back and retrieve it.  After several hours of backtracking, loading the medical droid onto the repulsorlift-equipped medical kit, and trekking back to the village, they set the droid to work trying to analyze the sick childrens' condition. The droid determined that the disease was artificial in nature, in other words, engineered.

The treatments began to take effect, and out of gratitude, the chief volunteered one of his scouts to take the PCs to the facility.  He also offered to teach Bowie one of the force powers used by the shamans of the village.  (at this point, the PCs leveled up)

The next morning, while discussing their next course of action, the stolen imperial comlink started picking up a transmission describing the village.  Immediately after, the whine of a speeder bike could be heard nearby and the PCs suddenly realized that they'd been spotted!

Okay, so I'm two sessions behind in this log, and tonight's session was like 6 hours of gaming goodness, but I'll try to fill it all in...

The PCs acted quickly enough to spot the Scout Trooper zoom off into the jungle.  Vaan quickly shouldered his blaster rifle and let off a shot that missed by mere inches.  Vazus Mandrake asked the PCs to take the village's Kybucks to stop the scout before the location of the village could be reported.

Unaccustomed to riding such beasts, the PCs hung on for dear life as the Kybucks raced into the jungle in hot pursuit.  They managed to draw near enough to the scout in a clearing to shoot him down, but realized that at the far end of the clearing was the Imperial communications outpost.

Wanting to maintain the element of surprise, Vaan charged and drew up (still mounted) right at the front door when a stormtrooper stepped out.  The trooper didn't have a chance, and Van continued his assault riding the Kybuck right into the outpost.  By this time Bowie and Koth had caught up and aided in finishing off the rest of the troops in the outpost.

While Koth checked out the computer systems, Vaan and Bowie searched the comm center and surrounding area, coming up with two full sets of intact stormtrooper armour, and a speeder bike.  Bowie and Vaan got into their armour, but Koth (being Bothan) would not be able to wear the helmet.  They managed to glean the location of the Imperial Prison Facility from the computers, as well as an email mentioning an airduct that required maintenance.  They also altered the transmission frequency of the comm center to match that of the interference generated by the spore-filled air, amplifying the white-noise effect over the area and then they blasted the door control from the outside, essentially sealing the facility.

They left for the detention facility immediately, Vaan and Koth on the speeder bike, Bowie still riding his Kybuck.  Upon arrival in the area, the PCs noted the heavy defenses at the front of the facility, but nothing much beyond patrolling biker scouts around the sides and back.  Vaan took out the two guards at the front blast doors with well-placed blaster shots, giving Bowie a clear path towards the air duct grate that they had read about earlier.  Working his way through, he ended up in the ceiling above the medical bay.  Seeing nobody inside, he quietly slipped down into the room.  At that moment, the medical technician walked out from behind the bacta tanks.  Bowie (still wearing stormtrooper armour) reflexively shot the tech before thinking.  Luckily nobody else heard the blast.  Checking the rest of the room, he noticed a pair of Felucians strapped down Frankenstein-style on surgical tables.  Each had had their right arms amputated and a long serrated bone blade extended from the elbow joint.

Bowie exited the medical bay, sealing the door behind him.  Unknown to Bowie, Koth had decided to go in after him and was approaching the med bay through the air duct.  Meanwhile, Vaan was on his way back to the ship in case the others needed a fast evac.

Bowie made his way over to the prisoners' cells and managed to bluff the guards into releasing Admiral Varth into his custody so he could be taken to the med bay.  At this point, he more or less walked out the front door with the very confused Admiral.  After some back and forth on the comlinks, the heroes all met up near the communications outpost they had trashed before with the ship and took off.

Back in the Alderaan system, they were met in space by Maya (the agent they had rescued on the space station way back), given a set of coordinates and instructed to meet a ship called The Resurgence there.

End of session...

I am getting way too behind here!   :-\

After dropping Admiral Varth off on The Resurgence and getting their pay, our heroes decided to spend a little R&R so they flew out to Bothawui with their credchips burning holes in their pockets and their eyes on picking up some droids.  Koth ended up buying several MSE-6 "mouse" droids to aid him in working on the ship, Bowie bought a medical droid, and Vaan just kept his R2 unit.

While on Bothawui, Bowie scanned the area for any possible force users and picked up a disturbance in the immediate viscinity.  After searching through the streets for some time, Bowie came across a group of Imperial officials near the main spaceport.  One of the officials (an Inquisitor searching for escaped Jedi) noticed the presence of another force user (Bowie), but didn't manage to identify him in the crowd.  Bowie hung back, and was about to start following the Imps when he noticed a Bothan was also watching them intently.  He ended up following both the Imperials and the Bothan until the Imps entered the spaceport.  The Bothan kept walking and disappeared around a corner.  Bowie used to force to convince the port authority to give him the transponder code of the Theta-class shuttle the Imps were using, then went back out in search of the Bothan.  The Bothan, however, had seen Bowie following him and was waiting around a corner with his blaster ready.  Bowie walked right around the corner and stopped, staring straight down the barrel of the Bothan's blaster pistol.  The Bothan demanded to know why Bowie was following him.  Bowie responded with "I, uh..." and was shot point blank in the face with the blaster set on stun.  Bowie managed to recover and pulled his blaster and so began the completely ineffective stun-fight, which ended up being won by Bowie when he used his Negate Energy power to completely ignore the Bothan's next shot.  This freaked the Bothan out, causing him to take off into the maze of alleys.

Bowie returned to the ship and convinced Koth to help check out the transponder code of the Imperial ship, which turned up as a blank code (not even unregistered, just blank).  Always thinking of their cover identity, Vaan decided it would be a good idea for them to take a job as a freighter just to keep up appearances.  They ended up meeting the same Bothan that Bowie had run into, who turned out to be a Bothan Spynet Operative.  He wanted transport to Nar Shaddaa, and in exchange, the PCs wanted him to find some information for them.  They bartered a bit, came to an agreeable price, and were soon in hyperspace heading back towards Nar Shaddaa.

After dropping the Bothan off, they arranged a rendezvous time and place, and then returned to the area of dead space where they met up with the Resurgence.  Admiral Varth called the PCs into a briefing and told them of his dealings with something called the Sarlaac Project.  He had uncovered one of the sources of goods, labour, and laundered credits that the Imperials were using, in the form of a minor Hutt crimelord named Darga on the planet Cato Nemoidia.  He instructed the PCs to try and find out what they could about the Hutt's links to the project.

The PCs, eager to test out their new gear, left for Cato Nemoidia immediately.  At the landing pad, they were met by a vicious swoop gang who demanded a landing tax.  Bowie used a Mind Trick to convince them that they didn't need to pay, and the bikers left without incident.  (I had 3 pages of printouts for that encounter, and Bowie went and ended it before it could even start!  lol)

Koth decided to stay with the ship while the PCs ventured out in search of Darga the Hutt.  After asking around some of the seedier cantinas, they were directed to the old warehouse district, which still showed signs of the orbital bombardments from the Clone Wars, where they would find Warrick Raden, a Devaronian who worked for Darga.  The PCs walked right up to the warehouse and were shot at by someone inside.  They stormed the building, taking down all but two of the attackers, who immediately surrendered.  PCs, meet Warrick Raden.  :p

They took Raden hostage, along with the other surviving thug and demanded to be taken to Darga.  While en route to Darga's palace, the thug tried to escape by leaping out of the moving speeder, only to be shot down by the PCs before he could fully escape.  (I decided not to give them a Dark Side point... this time!)

Once in Darga's palace, they offered their services to Darga as hired guns.  He accepted, but as a sign of loyalty ordered them to execute Raden for his weakness.  Vaan came up with a plan and told Darga that he couldn't kill an unarmed man, so he held out a blaster for Raden to take.  When Raden reached for the blaster, Vaan retracted his arm and punched him hard in the side of the head (non-lethal).  To Vaan's surprise, Raden didn't go down.  Vaan hit him again and in desperation, Raden lunged at the gun still held in Vaan's left hand and managed to snatch it out (natural 20) and blasted Vaan, barely making a scratch in his armour.  With the next hit, Raden went down.  Vaan retrieved his blaster and pistol whipped Raden a few times for good measure and offered to dispose of the "corpse".  Pleased, Darga accepted the offer and Bowie helped Vaan drag Raden's bloodied form out of the audience chamber.

Once out of sight, Vaan brought Raden out of unconsciousness, gave him a few credits and told him to get out of town as quickly as possible.

End of session.
