Focused Conjurer
« on: August 09, 2008, 07:06:08 AM »
So my Focused Conjurer 6 (banned Evocation, Necromancy, Enchantment) just hit 7th level (and Master Specialist) - and that means 4th level spells.  I have Collegiate Wizard and was granted a boon and already claimed the following 4th level spells: Evard's Black Tentacles, Arcane Eye, Displacer Form, Orb of Fire, Assay Spell Resistance, Minor Creation, Solid Fog, Scrying.

I'm looking for spells to learn at this level.  Right now on my short list is:
Spell Enhancer (SC), Greater Invisibility, Greater Mirror Image (PHBII), Shadow Well (SC)

I'm trying to keep the power level low so Polymorph and Celerity are out, although Displacer Form seems nice.  Not sure if Shadow Conjuration is going to be all that useful, since I have most of the really good ones prepared, or at least in my book.  Dimension Door is also of less use to me since I use the Abrupt Jaunt (PHBII) variant, although not altogether useless.

I can use any book, but I'm trying to keep the count down to PHB, PHBII, SC, CM since those are the ones I've already drawn from.

If it seems as though there aren't many other must-have 4th level spells, then I'll list my lower level ones.

I'd say Greater Invisibility, closely followed by Greater Mirror Image. Two awesome defense spells, with Greater Invisibility also being useable on the offensive.

Depending on how often you use summoning and if you have SMIII, SMIV could also be a decent choice, since you start gaining access to more and more SLA's in addition to all the other uses for conjured monsters.

Well, I took Collegiate Wizard, so those two spells are great - but what about the other four? :)

What does the rest of your party look like?

Mass enlarge person is nice if the party is melee-heavy.

I'm iffy on greater mirror image since it uses your immediate action, which should be saved for abrupt jaunt in that kind of situation. I like great invisibility the most from your list since it can be used on yourself or others.

Spell Enhancer is nice to have as a wand, so you don't spend slots on it and can pump up all the spells you cast...

About the other spells.... I would pick Greater Mirror Image, simply 'cause I like it more than G. Invisibility (even though G. Invis allow you to throw stuff and continue invisible...)

I would give G. Invis to the Rogue. :)

So are all we agreed on Shadow Well?

Whisper Gnome Rogue 4/Fighter 2, Human Paladin 6, Dragonborn Cleric 6.  The Gnome was interested in Invisible Blade, but the RP requirement is being enforced.  Paladin isn't really sure what she wants to do (except beat things), Cleric is sorta screwed because he only gets 1 skill point/level, which makes it hard to make fixes to your skills for things like Radiant Servant or Sacred Exorcist.  His deity is Bahamut and domains Luck and Time anyway.

Oh, the poor Cleric is stuck being a pure Cleric. Will he be able to keep up with the rest of the group?:p

I second Shadow Well.

I just noticed Dimension Door isn't amongst your list. IIRC, that's a Conjuration spell, no?

What do your spells look like now?  Wouldn't want to suggest a lower-level spell if you already have it.

Also, shadow conjuration will remain useful to you because it basically gives you one spontaneous spell slot to use for the really weird spell that you need right now.  It's like a poor man's contingency.

I have Abrupt Jaunt (alternate class feature from PH2) which doesn't let me teleport quite as far, but is its own "Get Out of Jail Free" card, so I feel like Dimension Door is almost wasted.

3rd level spells look like:
Bands of Steel (SC)
Haboob (Sandstorm)
Dimension Step (PH2)
Regroup (PH2)
Haste
Unluck (SC)
Melf's Unicorn Arrow (PH2)
Sleet Storm
Slow
Arcane Sight
Dispel Magic
Icelance (SC)
Phantom Steed

No fly?

Heart of earth and heart of water are particularly useful (stoneskin and freedom of movement respectively).

Consider Shadow conjuration if you are heavy on caster level based spells as you can mimic Create magic tattoo without the expensive material component.

Who needs Fly when you've got Alter Self? :-)

Unless I'm mistaken, Fly lets you target your allies as well, no?

The Heart of series is really good. They last hour/level, and give you a bunch of major bonuses (resist fire/20, swim speed, etc.). Two or more gives light fortification, all four gives heavy fortification.

Also, the Primal series is pretty good too. They last 24 hours, and give you another set of bonuses, the best of which is +5 Initiative. 2 of them gives Uncanny Dodge, all four gives Improved Uncanny Dodge.

I can't remember exactly where they are from. Complete Mage has one, and I think the other is Dragon Magic?

Like AndyJames said, they last 24hrs, give some bonuses to Spot, Listen, Jump, Climb and also provide + Initiative, (Improved) Uncanny Dodge, +10 all speed, +5 to reflexes, and 10ft blindsense if you're Dragonblooded. They're from Dragonmagic and one other source, but I don't know which one. They're /Src/Drd/Rgr spells. Max lvl is 4, so pretty low end.

I need to check these out. Sounds most interesting, cheers.
