Customize Domain

Thoughts on the "Customize Domain" feat, from Dragon 325?

Customize Domain [General]
You open up one of your domains to new sources of magical power.

Prerequisites: At least one domain, ability to cast 3rd-level divine spells.

Benefit: Choose one of your cleric domains.  You permanently exchange spells on your domain list for similar spells on any spell list you have access to.  You customize your domain when you choose this feat; you cannot later change your domain spells or return to your original domain spell list.  You can only choose to substitute spells that are of equal or lower level and that adhere to the following restrictions by domain.  Note that certain spells gain descriptors depending on how they're cast; you can choose such a spell as a spell with the descriptor you require so long as you only cast the spell in such a manner as to give it that descriptor.

Air: Spells with the air or electricity descriptors.
Animal: Spells that specifically affect animals, spells that summon animals, spells that have animals in their names (such as bull's strength or owl's wisdom).
Chaos: Spells with the chaotic descriptor.
Death: Spells that create death effects or that deal with undead.
Destruction: Evocation spells that deal damage.
Earth: Spells with the earth descriptor.
Evil: Spells with the evil descriptor.
Fire: Spells with the fire descriptor.
Good: Spells with the good descriptor.
Healing: Spells of the healing subschool.
Knowledge: Divination spells.
Law: Spells with the lawful descriptor.
Luck: Abjuration spells or spells that allow a bonus on a d20 roll.
Magic: Any kind of spell, but you must select a spell of one level lower than normal.
Plant: Spells that specifically affect plants, spells that summon plant creatures, spells that have plants in their names (such as tree stride).
Protection: Abjuration spells.
Strength: Spells that give a bonus to Strength or cause a penalty to Strength.
Sun: Spells with the light descriptor.
Travel: Spells that alter speed or provide movement.
Trickery: Illusion or transmutation spells that alter appearance.
War: Spells that begin with "mass".
Water: Spells with the water descriptor and spells that create or modify water.

Special: You can gain this feat multiple times.  Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new domain.

So clearly the way to go is to use this with character who have access to alternate spell lists, like a wizard dip or something.  Thoughts?

Somewhat old, but borked like what Substitute Powers can do for Manifesters. Magic domain here is just hilarious.

Yep.  That's what I thought.

The only thing that makes it less borked is that you really do need to dip arcane classes... and what cleric build wants to do that??

There're worst dips than Wizard, mind you. With all the ACFs and whatnot they got from various splats I think that dip may be worth delaying spellcasting progression by one level, maybe. It's not as good as a (Cloistered) Cleric dip for some other (not necessarily caster) builds, but it's good nonetheless.

If you took a level of chameleon, would you count as having access to all spell lists?

As a Cleric, I can dip Wizard and pick up Improved Initiative, a Familiar, and unrestricted access to wizard Spell Trigger items.

That's not bad, almost worth the loss of a caster level considering the bonus to action economy you can get with a Familiar.

I plugged this one on the Expanding spell list thread:

Magic: Any kind of spell, but you must select a spell of one level lower than normal.

... so all arcane up to 8s can be divines.

What would this do to Mind domain ?
 :)

Chameleon's spell list gives you access to every spell in existence. So that's a better dip than Wizard. In fact, you could just make your Chameleon floating feat Customize Domain. That way you can swap it out as necessary.

Getting the floating feat requires a second level, and neither of these gets you a Familiar.  It's a good dip, but it's not strictly better than a 1-level dip of Wizard.
