is my mount legal?
« on: August 19, 2011, 02:55:33 PM »
hi i have a
Totem druid 1 / paladin 5 Halfling outrider 3

I took Devoted tracker and natural bond
The totem druid i picked was horse so it says i get my companion at +2 levels and can get it dire at lvl 5 instead so if i got my math right
druid level = 1 +2 for totem +3 for natural bond and +3 for halfling outrider then -4 for the dire horse wich = druid level 5 and paladin level 8 for my mounts abilities and after applying the warbeast template to it it would end up being a 15 hd creature am i right?
Naturally an 8d8 creature
Warbeast+1 Hd Speed +10 +2 to all ride checkscan use armor Str+3 Con +3 Wis +2 +1 Listen and Spot
druid   +2 hd +2 Natural Armor + 1 str dex
pal   +4 hd +6 Natural Armor +2 Strength
also any broken rules here?

Applying warbeast to it is a bit questionable, isn't it? I guess if you do it yourself by training it, it should be possible, but I'm imagine some DMs might balk at it anyway. The druid AC entry says it must be an "average animal of its type", or something like that. So applying warbeast might arguably make it no longer eligible to be an animal companion.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. A warbeast is not completely typical for its kind. Since you could technically still apply the template after attaining the animal as an animal companion, it will basically come down to a DMs call what happens then. They could say that they animal is no longer a legal animal companion and that you lose control of it, or they might be nice and let you keep it.

What's typical to its kind here is not defined though, but it's unarguable that a level one druid has one like that. What happens after 1st level (effective level in this case here, anyway) is seemingly fair game, since what's applicable is also not defined. So applying Warbeast looks fine.

Well.. IMO anyway.

The Warbeast template does require that the base creature be a bit special even before the training, since it represents both training and breeding.  So I don't think you can apply it (though a Riding Dog or Warhorse are valid options).  So... I don't buy it.

You can't apply it to a warhorse or riding dog, though. If that's what you meant.

No but a Riding Dog, and Warhorse are valid Animal Companions... But they are not typical members of the Canine or Equine race... they are trained.

Totem druids can be lawful good?  I used Beastmaster in the Supermount build because it was the only way I could find to get around the alignment issues.
