Updating a 3.0 Feat to 3.5. Did I do this right?
« on: August 16, 2011, 05:50:07 AM »
This is from the Ghostwalk book. It seems a little weird to me, but maybe it's right. I don't know. It's been too long since I played 3.0, but I'm pretty sure at the time even the original version of the fav enemy was just a standard +1, so it kind of makes sense that the 3.0 feat that gave you more fav enemies would give you the same number.

Here's the original:
Extra Favored Enemy [General]
You select an additional favored enemy.
Prerequisites: Base attack bonus +5, favored enemy.
Benefit: You add a new favored enemy to your list of foes. Initially, you gain the standard +1 bonus on certain skill checks and on damage rolls against this new favored enemy. When you advance beyond the level at which you gained Extra Favored Enemy, this bonus increases as other favored enemy bonuses do (by +1 at 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th ranger level). For example, suppose you select goblinoids as your first favored enemy when you are a 1st-level ranger and magical beasts as your second when you reach 5th level. Then you take Extra Favored Enemy as your feat at 6th level and select aberrations. At this point, you have a +2 bonus against goblinoids and a +1 bonus against both magical beasts and aberrations. When you reach 10th level, your bonuses rise to +3 against goblinoids and +2 against magical beasts and aberrations.

Here's the one I updated:
Extra Favored Enemy [General]
You select an additional favored enemy.
Prerequisites: Base attack bonus +5, favored enemy.
Benefit: You add a new favored enemy to your list of foes. Initially, you gain the standard +2 bonus on certain skill checks and damage rolls against this new favored enemy. When you advance beyond the level at which you gained Extra Favored Enemy, this bonus increases as other favored enemy bonuses do (by +2 at 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th ranger level). For example, suppose you select goblinoids as your first favored enemy when you are a 1st-level ranger and magical beasts as your second when you reach 5th level. Then you take Extra Favored Enemy as your feat at 6th level and select aberrations. At this point, you have a +4 bonus against goblinoids and a +2 bonus against both magical beasts and aberrations. When you reach 10th level, your bonuses rise to +4 against goblinoids and +4 against magical beasts and aberrations.
I reject your reality, and substitute my own.

In 3.0, all your existing favored enemies improved by +1 when you got a new favored enemy.  In 3.5, you pick one existing favored enemy to get an extra +2 when you get a new favored enemy.

Here's the text for favored enemy from the 3.0 SRD:
[spoiler]
Favored Enemy: At 1st level, a ranger may select a type of creature as a favored enemy. (A ranger can only select his own race as a favored enemy if he is evil.) Due to his extensive study of his foes and training in the proper techniques for combating them, the ranger gains a +1 bonus to Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, and Wilderness Lore checks when using these skills against this type of creature. Likewise, he gets the same bonus to weapon damage rolls against creatures of this type. A ranger also gets the damage bonus with ranged weapons, but only against targets within 30 feet (the ranger cannot strike with deadly accuracy beyond that range). The bonus doesn't apply to damage against creatures that are immune to critical hits.

At 5th level and at every five levels thereafter (10th, 15th, and 20th level), the ranger may select a new favored enemy, and the bonus associated with every previously selected favored enemy goes up by +1.

Table: Ranger Favored Enemies
Type
Aberrations
Animals
Beasts
Constructs
Dragons
Elementals
Fey
Giants
Humanoid type
Magical beasts
Oozes
Outsider type
Plants
Shapechangers
Undead
Vermin

* Rangers may not select "humanoid" or "outsider" as a favored enemy, but they may select a more narrowly defined type of humanoid or outsider. A ranger can only select his own race as a favored enemy if he is evil.

Plus, it exists already in one of the 3.5e books. CW, was it?

No, that one gave you +3 damage against what you already had. This one gives you additional favored enemies.

Maat_Mons is correct. You could just treat it as if you got the favored enemy class feature again, though that may end up over powered by letting you stack up vs 1 type of enemy. Just say you get another favored enemy with a +2 bonus to associated checks and that it may be increased as any favored enemy selected when leveling, such as those picked at 1st and 5th level.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

Nemesis + Wise to Your Ways + This + Favored Enemy (Evil) would be powerful. There's quite a few other useful options, too.

How about this?

Extra Favored Enemy [General]
You select an additional favored enemy.
Prerequisites: Base attack bonus +5, favored enemy.
Benefit: You add a new favored enemy to your list of foes with a +2 bonus to associated skill checks, attack, and damage. When you advance beyond the level at which you gained Extra Favored Enemy, this bonus may be chosen to increase as other favored enemy do (by +2 at 10th, 15th, and 20th ranger level). You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new favored enemy.

Nemesis + Wise to Your Ways + This + Favored Enemy (Evil) would be powerful. There's quite a few other useful options, too.
That's pretty cool, actually.  The question would be how to get a Favored Enemy bonus high enough to make it worth it.  I'm comparing it to stuff like the Paladin's Divine Grace.  I guess if you have a Favored Enemy anyway then why not.

That's awesome! This should be added to the ranger's handbook (and any new one that gets created, per the discussion thread on it going on right now).

Just take a couple levels of Paladin (Hunter of Fiends variant) for favored enemy (evil outsiders), and you're pretty sound in that respect.

There's FE (evil outsiders), which is effective against any outsider with the evil subtype. Then there's FE (evil), which is effective against anything with an evil alignment, regardless of type or subtype. The Ranger Handbook says Stalker of Karash and Harper Paragon grant it.

The "Stalker of Evil" was one of my favorite builds...

I read this as "Extra Flavored Enemy" and couldn't help but think "I took this feat, now every time I eat an Animal it tastes like cinnamon!"
