Sensible expansions of permanency
« on: August 09, 2011, 05:06:04 AM »
Permanency is an arcane spell, and as such, all of the personal spells able to be made permanent are arcane also. But while divine casters can get the spell through domains and divine spells are valid targets for permanency (such as magic fang), I don't think 'personal only' divine spells were considered when designing the spell.

If you were going to expand the permanency list to include more divine spells, what would you add without exceeding the power level of the spell.

I think ok choices would be spells that relate directly to existing permanentable spells:
Detect poison (detect magic)
Speak with Animals (tongues/comprehend languages)

Do these seem ok?
What else?

I think that it's okay to wait a bit more before you bump your own thread.

Anyspell...

I dare anyone to find a hole in that logic.

poor me. Time for another bump... :bigeye

Surley you guys have some ideas about this. Anyone ever expanded the permancey list before?

Do the two examples seem reasonable?

Ironwood really needs to be on the Permanency list.  Anyone making a Druid should ask about it, especially those limited to Core Only.

Two thoughts:
1) The "valid for permanency" being a list instead of a description of eligible spell types is just stupid. It needs to be vastly expanded IMHO, preferably to "any spell that is a valid target of the Persistent Spell feat".

2) No one can really provide a useful answer to you other than your DM. If you aren't creating a class of spells that is valid, but just adding specific spells, then noone else's opinion particularly matters.

There are quite a few spells that should be Permanency eligible, since they aren't too powerful

Agreed.  Actually, the Ironwood spell in general needs a change so it doesn't consume a set of wooden objects each time you cast it and the duration runs out/is dispelled.  That does eventually become expensive.  The material component should have been a focus instead.
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!
