Recommendations on a flying mount.
« on: June 29, 2011, 07:39:46 PM »
So, I am playing a 14th level Solamnic Knight (LG Human Favored Soul 5/Church Inquisitor 1/Ordained Champion 3/Knight of the Crown 1/Knight of the Sword 3/Knight of the Rose 1) in the Age of Mortals campaign, and we are just about to finish the Spectre of Sorrows book. My knight are a low-dex full-plate kind of character, and as there are some major open terrain battles coming up, I feel the need to get myself a flying mount to boost my mobility.

Fortunately, I have the leadership feat, and my leadership score is through the roof. I can get a neutral cohort without having to choose a less powerful one, but going for a chaotic or evil cohort is definately out of the question. My character had to take the Mounted Combat feat as a prereq, but I only have 10 ranks in ride (Total mod is +9), so I wont be negating any hits on it, which means that it needs to be tough. Finally, I will not often require my mount to be able to inflict damage by itself, but it would be nice if it could destroy a few mooks once in a while. Weaker intelligent mounts may be given fighter levels in order to boost their ECL to my cohort level, but nothing else, and maybe even dungeoncrasher levels, but the DM is still considering that one.

I was considering to get a gynosphinx, as I like their high perception skills and their spells, bt they seem awfully fragile for an areal steed. Dragonnes and Crinosphinxes are unfortunately out of my reach untill I hit level 15, but I am not sure wether I can gt the downtime to find a monsterous mount if I don't get one now. Finally, griffons are nixed because the aparently only wants to carry elves in this campaign world, and anything even remotely connected to dragons are also completely unavaliable.

So, in y situation, what would you get?

Remember, if you take the mount as your cohort, it gets extra HD and class levels depending on its LA and such.

Grab a unicorn mount and give it levels in warlock. Its eldritch blasts are now rainbow-flavored, and it can fly once you give it the proper invocation.

I dare anyone to find a hole in that logic.

As much as I would find it hilarious to have my big and manly knight prance around on a unicorn pooping rainbows in all direvtions, Im afraid that it is not going to happen. The DM is scared shitless about the potential brokenness of cohorts, and has ruled that sentient monsters can only take fighter levels. And HE will pick its feats, to ensure that no cheesy stuff is gonna happen.

I suggest that you beat your DM with a hotmop.

To be fair, Bad Things(tm) can happen to campaigns where the players start taking cohorts.

True, but I'd rather him just ban the feat then give me a cohort with silly feats. I had a DM created cohort once, it had Toughness, Endurance and I think Agile....and they weren't feats chosen as prereqs. Since my toon was evil, I executed it for being incompetent after 2 sessions.

:lol

Just slap some fighter levels on the gynosphinx, then. That (and a +Con magic item) should take care of the fragility problem, anyway.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

A Lammasu has 1 fewer HD and 1 higher LA than a Gynosphinx, but more than enough CON to make up for it.
It also fits really nice for a Solamnic Knight, since it is always LG.

IIRC Age of Mortals means, divine magic is available?
Just get a Druid Cohort and either ride his Dire Bat or have him Wildshape into something you can use as a mount?

Can you retrain some of your feats?

Improved Leadership (Heroes of Battle) combined with Dragon Cohort (Dragonomicon) should open up the possibility of a Very Young Gold Dragon (large size).

It's been a while since I read some of the older Dragonlance books... was there some goofiness about metallics not being around?.. but one of the characters was a Silver in alternate form or somesuch shenanegans?

Can you get/retrain Wild Cohort?

With, forex, a Dire Eagle from RoS (as Druid-3[-3 more for WC]) so you'd get a 10HD DireEagle (5base+5 bonus) @ 15th level
