Wizard vs. Commoner
« on: June 09, 2011, 03:04:57 PM »
The little difference is - as we all know - the spellbook.
How do you protect it? (Since it is one of the most valuable item of the party and loosing it would mean a lot of time and money needs to be invested again, not to mention that you are a commoner meanwhile...)

You surely are a troll.

There are other differences as well:
Familiars, better saves and bonus feats.

Also, there's a heap of ways to protect your spellbook. I prefer keeping a few spares around with other spells I might need, so If I lose one I don't lose them all.
Monks are pretty much the best designed class ever.

That's a good way to pretend get handy of a unpleasant situation, but I thought more of protecting your spellbook from getting stealed than getting OK with it beeing stealed. I did read about some way via passwords, but forgot how it worked. Also some curse for the thief and some linking to find it back would be nice. But i got no idea how to do that.

Take the Eidetic Spellcaster ACF...(Dr357)?

Contingency/Craft Contingency to have it teleport to you if it's ever out of your person for more than a day or any other teleporty offerings.  Coat it in magical traps. Be undead or be immune to poison and smother it in contact poisons. Secret page.

Shackle it to your thigh (always attended gets to make saves plus hard to steal)

I play in Eberron so I usually have spellshards and have them embedded into my wizards forearms.

CArc and CMag have alternate spellbook materials, so make it out of the hardest materials you can.

and there are a shitload of threads about it.

Tattoos can't be stolen. Couple with Spell Mastery or a small mirror so you can always read them.

Get a -2 cursed sword made of adamantine and hide a spellshard or scroll or whatever in the hilt. Unless your captors take the time to use a Limited Wish, Wish, or Miracle on you, they can't take the sword away from you. Prepare your spells, carve your way out of the prison, etcetera.

Personally, I play commoners, because i'm too worried about my wizard's spellbook being stolen.

xD

I looked up the Eidetic Spellcaster ACF... It's a nice way, but the costs are high.
Tattooing won't work I think, since your body won't have that many pages place to write all the spells down.

Contingency is a nice way to go and has some possibilities, but I am level 2 wizard atm :/
Think I'll get a chain and a masterwork lock first to keep it from stealing, but some way to teleport it back before spell grade 6 would be nice. (Doesn't Harry Potter has this handy spell...?)

What you could do is throw in as many spells as you can and sell your spellbook at level one, then retrain your feats and rebuild into the Eidetic Spellcaster ACF. Then you get lots of money at level one and don't have to worry about this.

I have been looking around a bit... where can i find the value of a spellbook with spells in it? Might want to sell some of my backup books.

Also note that wizards automatically know every cantrip in existence, meaning you'll probably have 2 or 3 spellbooks just to hold all of them.

My personal list of cantrips is at about 50 spells, each taking one page at the spell book (0815-book has 100 pages).
But there does not have to be need, since only wizards need the spell books and they got one at their own.

I don't understand why the weenie filter I post through, didn't tag this post  :D

Early wizard + paranoia approach ... is kinda a good idea.
Later, it's not a problem ala Contingency + Tattoos, as already said.

What about level 1 ??
