Stealth Handbook Compilation
« on: May 21, 2011, 02:14:14 PM »
Would anyone be interested in a stealth handbook?

It would go over how to optimize mundane stealth, invisibility, and other methods of nondetection.

The first part would be about optimizing hide/move silently so that you can reliably hide from opponents.

The next part would be about how to avoid detection methods other than a high spot check.

I would also have a list of what classes give hide in plain sight and other special abilities which improve your ability to remain hidden.

If anyone wants to contribute, I'm looking for any tips or tricks that you may have or any interesting classes/feats/items. However I am not looking for things which give small bonuses to hide/move silently. Anything that is easy to get that gives 5 or more would be handy.

Below is what I have assembled so far. It is a bit sparse right now, I'll fill it out more over the next few days.

Umbral disciple 3 (MoI) also gives hide in plain sight

And I think insiduous magic (FR) could also count as Vs. spells

Ensure you familiarize yourself with JaronK's scouting guide, as that is probably the most valuable resource for stealth on the boards.

Rogues get skill mastery too, silly.
If I say something about real world physics, and someone disagrees, assume I am right 90% of the time. This number goes up to 100% if I am late night posting - trust me, my star dust sibs.

It would have to be something that does MORE than this handbook:

Which seems to do plenty already.

Hm, it would definitely be easier to add onto that handbook than it would be to make a new one.

There definitely could be more on stealth in combat and a larger section on spellcasting to detect/hide.

The 'Joker' bard over at GitP had some stuff on defeating divinations, which is the major part missing from JaronK's handbook.  Divination hoses sneaks at level 5+.

Otherwise, Warlock 1 gets you Darkness as an invocation, and Devil's Eyes so you can see through your own darkness.  You're a cloud of concealment, which people can autospot in well lit areas, but you can totally hide in the cloud (as long as they don't work out it's centred.. but to be honest, getting the kind of vantage point to see where the centre is is hard unless you're flying).  So that's an alternate HiPS.

Also, using bluff to 'create a distraction' to hide, and smokesticks.  And the ever popular permanencied silenced dagger in an airtight sheath.

Mind you, as was pointed out to me on giantitp, there's actually two HIPSes.

One is (Ex) and works anywhere, but requires something to hide into or behind - it just lets you do so while under observation.
The other is (Su) and thus defeated by an AMF, but lets you hide anywhere, even if there's nothing to hide behind. I believe the Assassin's HIPS is an example, though that one requires a shadow nearby.
