Red Wizard/Shadowcraft Mage help needed
« on: April 13, 2011, 08:42:26 PM »
So I have a character I'd say is quite flavorful in mind, but there's this little problem: I want to be both a shadowcraft mage and a red wizard.

The "Full build" looks something like this:
Illusionist 5/Master Specialist 3/Shadowcraft Mage 5/Archmage 1/Shadow Adept 1/Red Wizard 5, so yeah. Not many levels to spare, afaik(If there was some I knew about, I'd most likely have already turned them into PrCs that are good with just a couple levels).

What I know of: Stoneblessed, but then I'd have to find a way to meet the prerequisites for Shadowcraft Mage, while losing a total of 3 caster levels, which isn't something I'd be too keen on, but maybe, if all else fails.

Then there is changeling with the racial emulation feat. Well, not too bad I'd say, but I'm not entirely sure it'd work for both PrCs at once. Losing a feat might be better than losing 3 caster levels, but then, it's effectively two feats, as humans have a bonus one.

And then, there's the schools to ban problem. Enchantment, most likely, and then I'd say evocation, as one can emulate them with the shadowcraft mage. Being a focused specialist is most likely out of question, as with Red Wizard I'll lose access to level 9 spells from a select school, and probably some twink ones too. So it could be necromancy. Can't be too bad losing on energy drain, huh? Aaaand, if I'm going with the stoneblessed path, I'll also lose access to level 8 spells, which is kinda sad.

Any suggestions, ideas, comments are appreciated.

Ask for retraining?

Also, can't you play a gnome?

Gnomes can't qualify for red wizard. It is a human-only PrC.

Use the SCM racial adaptation found in the same section. It says, at a DM's discretion, the PrC may be taken by any race if they are a member of a cabal of illusionists or a similar organization. The Red Wizards are separated into cabals, so this fits.

You'll want to take the 5 levels of Red Wizard immediately after Wizard 5, also.  Havings Sims who can lead Circles is the shit.  I also advocate both Tainted Sorcerer and Incantatrix on Red Wizard, to take advantage of all the evil a Red Wizard frequently brings to bear on the world, and well, anything Incantatrix is by definition awesome.

I see. If all goes well, my DM will probably aprove of this. If not, oh well, else I could squeeze by a couple more levels for PrC's effects. Say, one more level of red wizard for tattoo focus and a dip of mindbender. Maybe one could get another level, too.

Also, @red wizards with incantatrix... Erm... You'll have to ban two schools just by doing that. Not so nice, especially if you're really specialized or even a focused specialist. To say nothing about a focused changeling specialist.

Don't know if your actually using FR. But fluffwise if the Red Wizards find a gnome who is a talented wizard, they will be more than happy to recruit him. (They actually test all kids for magical ability and stuff.)
