After a while, you're expected to have 2, which of course means you need 3. This continues until you need the Wish economy to keep up.

True, but by the time you've had to use both in a single situation, you're probably very near the end of the campaign. Most situations can be solved with the application of a single sudden tree, so there's no need for your DM to expect you to have more than 1. You can probably get by with only needing 3 or 4 at a time by the end.
So you end up stuck in an endless loop, unable to act, forever.

In retrospect, much like Keanu Reeves.

About the arms race? Yes. About having at least one? Fuck no. If you can't think of at least half a dozen uses for an instant tree on your average adventure, you're not trying hard enough.

For starters:
Bridge
Doorstop
Ladder
Lockpick
Foe Detonator
Firewood
So you end up stuck in an endless loop, unable to act, forever.

In retrospect, much like Keanu Reeves.

It also works as a nice torture device.

Shove up the nearest orifice and start talking. They'll get the hint if you push hard enough.

Uh... It's in the DMG.

A particularly lenient DM might even let it work as a battering ram.

Especially if you can plant it in an opposing wall.

aimed correctly, you can use it to seal a gate, block portals, or other more mundane openings. combined with a plant growth effect, it can get rather amusing. seriously, it is the single most useful and versatile item ever created. i cannot think of one with more utility off the top of my head. it might not keep up with salt or a cow, but it has its uses in that fashion too.

For a cheap item, sure.

All the way around? Psychoactive skin of proteus pretty much beats almost everything else. Possibly put together.

I've always liked having lots of minor trinkets.

Sending stones: For if the party ever gets split.
Chronocharm of the Horizon Walker; movement, yeah. A half dozen boodspike: Tempo's as well.
A couple Safewing Emblems; you never know when you might need one.
Various stat boosters, save boosters
If cleric, dozens of reliquary holy symbols
Anklet of Translocation, Armband of Elusive Action, Artificer's Monocle, Brooch of Stability (kinda meh, but cheap and if it saves my life, it's worth it), a few healing belts, strong arm bracers, a hat of disguise...

Armor: Whatever is best for the character, + whatever bonuses I can get, +whatever augment crystal (usually the cheap DR/1 one and a restful crystal); +armor spikes which eventually get enchanted.

Weapon: A good melee weapon with a wand chamber, and the +1 Eager/warning quarterstaff of nerveskitter someone else pointed out.

I am also not a fan of any "charged" items; I generally try to buy something with charges/day or infinite use.

I almost always get a ring of sustenance and a ring of anticipation.
