Yeah, while everyone thinks of the Beguiler as an Illusion/Enchantment caster, they actually have a decent selection of Transmutation, Divination, Conjuration, and even a couple Abjuration spells. Warmage, while mostly Evocation and the blasty parts of Conjuration, also has a few Divination, non-blasty Conjuration, Necromancy, and Illusion spells. The list casters are focused, but more on concept than specific schools.

Quickened Maw of Chaos sounds fun. What's the easiest way to get the chaotic subtype so that you're immune?

Set up a Maw of Chaos and go Standstill and Improved Trip on their asses to lock them inside. :D
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

I'd personally say start with a duskblade base, since most AC adjusting spells are low level. Increase HD, remove Armor Prof. Add in Abjurant Champion class features, remembering to make the class bonus to spell-based AC apply to non-abjurations (because who wants a class that gains extra AC from only Shield, since Mage Armor is conjuration). Add in some defensive class features like the Knight's Bulwark of Defence and Vigilant Defender, the Dragonlance War Mage's Arcane Aegis, perhaps a variant of the Shield Block and Shield Counter manoeuvres. Allow part of the Armor and/or shield bonus to apply to touch attacks.

For a spell list give AC-granting spells (Mage Armor, Shield, Dragonskin etc.), some restraining spells (grasping hand, telekinesis, hold person/monster, solid fog, etc.), some minor teleports (to interpose you between the monsters and the squishies), protection spells (resist elements et al), some weapon and stat buffing spells (GMW, Bull's Strength et al, keen edge) and some debuffs(enervation, ray of enfeeblement, dispel effects).

There is a reason why the Abjurant Champion class is abbreviated "AC".

How about adding a familiar or animal companion? Something they could ride into battle and share protective spells with.

How about access to the Hexblade spell list? Lots of useful spells, nothing too crazy (with the exception of polymorph).

I think we can all agree on that the spell list needs to be changed.

Personally, I'd very much favor the list-casting mechanic of Warmage/Dread Necro/Beguiler. Give him some useful spells to cast and some thematically fitting ones (including non-core spells), and give him advanced learning more often.

An animal companion would be fine, but no familiars. This class is balanced by it not having a familiar.

It wouldn't manner since the AC could easily take the Obtain Familiar feat.
